On the left is a double switch I put in, to separate the fan from the ceiling light that goes with it.

Sometimes you just want the fan only. I did this with some of my ceiling fans too.

Out of curiosity, why did you go with white switches, but brushed metal plates?

I have a Texas question. What is used to house the wiring? Or is it Romex there, like it is here?

Not having conduit was a shocker to me when I started opening things up. the only way to wire here is to go up in the attic and drop new wires in the walls. I miss conduit.
All romex here.  You'll obviously see conduit for runs along cinderblock or other solid substrate, but for sheetrock over stick-framing it's all romex.

Indeed.  I installed all aluminum faceplates in my Airstream when I rewired it.

We rented a condo before we moved here, after we sold our home up there.

We did some painting and decorating in that condo, much of which we were reimbursed for.

The stainless wall plates (not brushed metal) were not reimbursed, so I took them all down, replaced them with the craplastic ones I took off, and brought them to use here.

They were not cheap. The regular brushed metal ones are cheap.

I could not get my preferred brand (or colors) for most of the switches and outlets I replaced.

The white has grown on me. It's a nice contrast.

Conduit is from my understanding mainly an Illinois thing for residential.  Most here at Romex.

And I was really confused by your picture, because you should be easily able to find a single dimmer switch, they are separate from each other.  As multiple posters already stated.

I posted it to show that they were not in fact a single component - rather they were two separate switches in one box with one plate.

He said it was a covid/supply-chain issue.  I'm the one who said I couldn't find something currently.  I didn't take a picture of it, but the metal plate on the dimmer switch is, for some reason, very wide and it touches the adjacent switch, making them look like one dual-switch component.  And I, not knowing much of anything about electrical work, didn't know any better.  Plus when I looked up dual switches, they're a thing, albeit far less common, but I assumed that's what I was looking for.

Now I know better.  I learned something.

Yeah the dimming electronics of the switch make it very wide behind the faceplate.  I could see how it might "touch" the toggle switch next to it and appear to be one unit.

Admittedly, I would've known that had I only gone to the trouble to actually remove them and take a better look.  But that would've involved cutting the breaker, and I was just trying to get a quick look to see what I needed to buy.

Which reminds me.....what's weird about my house (and has made me grumpy before) is that my breaker box is outside on the South wall.  I've never lived in another home that was done this way.  Or even known anybody who lived in one.  Breaker boxes are always in garages or a hallway....or something inside.  It's weird to me that the thing is outdoors.  Even my grandpa's house has an indoor box, and he built out the newer portion of that house where the box is in about 1950.  My house was built in 2006.....it's not even that old.

My dad tells me this isn't as unusual as I think, and that it's a thing that happens.  I've just never seen it.  And it's a pain in the butt if I need to get to it and it's raining, or has been raining, or it's dark out.

I asked a friend of mine who moonlighted as an electrician in his earlier years how much he thought it'd cost to get that thing moved into the garage.  He said "About two."  I said "Two what?"  He said "Too much," with a laugh.  His way of saying leave it where it is.

Well now I know two people.

Where you live, it probably doesn't matter much, except if it's dark....that'd be a pain in the butt.  Here, where it's monsoon season like 9 out of 12 months, it frequently sucks if I need to get to it.

Kinda like how there was a pergola on the back porch when I moved in.  It was pretty, and I'm sure in SoCal it'd be awesome.  It was all kinds problematic here, so I tore it down and put a tin roof up.  Some things just don't belong in SETX.
