Dang, @MikeDeTiger , you've had a run, huh?

re:mountain driving
I was born and raised in those hills- a bit north and east of there. It's NOT the same, anymore.  I could hunt from my back porch growing up, if i chose, and could walk down to a lake that was all mine until Saturday through Sunday, and then it was mine again.  If i set out on a trek walking, i could walk for hours and not see another anything modern or suggesting civilization- now? that same house I grew up in is in a neighborhood... the 26 acres with a bit over 500' of lake frontage is now several lots with docks.... I don't even think 'they' pay for sunshine anymore- I think it finds them without directions.  but the driving?  it seemed like no big deal growing up- a twisty turning road with off camber shoulders was no match for any driver up there- if the posted speed limit is 35, then they're doing 50.  I went home escaping a hurricane, here, once.  i had time to drive around and see the old grounds... I was driving 25-30 in a 35 with people on my arse impatient, and felt like i barely had control.  it's not a skill you retain.  i recall passing big dump trucks on those twisting holler roads and having juuuust enough lane to get past them, and if i didn't i'd be looking at a unguarded probably 50' tumble down a mountain side, and not worrying at all- doing it all the time while doing 50+ and them 50+... when i went home during that hurricane?  i was praying I'd not encounter one of those dumpers.  Everyone speaks of the 'tail of the dragon' with 330+ turns in a 11mile stretch i think it is... deals gap is it's proper name... folks from all over the world come ride/drive it on their superbikes and supercars - they make commercials for jimmy's sake... and all the while 'tail of the dragon' or 'dragon's tail' is tame compared to some of those roads that are lessor kept.  there are some places the asphalt (if it's lucky enough to have it) is thicker at the base of the rise than the top- it slides down.  i'm not playing.  either when it's created and hot, or during regular summer days and over time... i'm not taking any shot at you whatsoever when i say it doesn't surprise me what happened to you- and it would to me too, now- but driving there? it's an acquired and easily lost skill.  the old nascar drivers were shine runners, and they emerged from those mountains to rule the tracks- that isn't an accident or coincidence.

re: puppy
Again, not making light or poking- i have three dogs who are now aging and have had a rescued dog at every point in my life when it was suitable to have one.  i'd rather have them than people around, any day and i mean that.  a catahoula leopard dog i had (Soco) got sick once and i was baffled... turns out it was poison... turns out i poisoned her... she died years afterward, but of liver failure and i can't help but think it was because of the damage i caused... i had those glade plug in things with essential oils... they may not have been glade, but you get the point.  also, i mopped the floor with one of those disposable dander grabbers that has some sort of oil on them... many of those oils are straight poison to dogs.  it is one of my life's greatest shame's that i brought harm to that pup and may have contributed to her early demise- and because of something easily avoided and because i just didn't know.

i say these things^ because you 'just can't know', until you do.  I'm happy you didn't meet a dump truck full of limestone gravel from the rock query at 50mph... it sounds as if you're lucky it was another flatlander likely driving as carefully as you were.

@Drew4UTk ,

Since you might be familiar with the area, where we were staying had a Sevierville address, though it was actually closer to Pigeon Forge than Sevierville.  If you know where Wears Valley is, we were on a mountain accessed from there.  Wears Valley was basically the foot of the mountain where we came down to get anywhere else.  Some of the 6 mile trek up and down that mountain I would drive 25ish--maybe 30--and noted the speed limit was 35, and thought anybody actually doing 35 through there would be in the obituaries the next day.

There were 2 or 3 turns, however, where I'm positive even the locals wouldn't even come close to that.  It was near U-turns, and I'm talking about just a few yards of space between pavement at the curve.  It was the limit of my truck's turning radius to even take that turn, and that much only at 3-4 mph.  In fact, I'm not even sure I stayed in my "lane,"....I was fortunate that I never met another vehicle coming the other direction at those spots.  It was all you could do to take the turn while hogging the entire road.  It's just not physically possible anyone could take those curves at 35 mph.  You'd tip over headlong either right into somebody's yard or else off the side of the mountain, as you say.  Those few spots were treacherous.

And yet....not where I wrecked.  It really was all about that jackhole leaving a U-haul type truck in the middle of the road, forcing me to go around it while the other guy was pulling out of a parking spot around it on the other side.  The more I've thought about it, the more I think the curve and the incline didn't have as much to do with it as I thought, and that this could've happened anywhere to me, even on straight and flat roads in my home state.

Not unrelated....can't say I was impressed with the Sevier County sheriff's dept for never showing up when we called them.  Not that the guy I collided with stuck around anyway.  But without a police report, it really screwed up my insurance claim.  I have a feeling my premiums are about to have lift-off too, but they probably would've done that to me no matter what.

There will probably come a day when I go back.  But right now the whole idea of east TN has left a bad taste in my mouth.

On the plus side, I'm not sure how many times I've been to that area since I was a kid, but this was the first time I ever saw a bear.  All the trash cans on the mountain had bear-proof cages around them, and the Airbnb host warned us to keep our car doors locked because bears have learned how to open them, which I thought was quite something.  The morning I left at sun-up to get to the nearest Ram dealership, I saw a little fella roaming around in the road on my way down the mountain.  Wasn't able to get any pictures, but it was quite a sight, and I think probably the first bear I've ever seen in person.  He appeared to be alone, but I reckon he was still pretty young, and a mama-bear may not have been too far away.  I don't know how aggressive those black bears are, but seems like if they were prone to attacking people then we'd hear about it a lot more around there.  The locals talk about them like we talk around here about racoons and armadillos digging up our flower beds....kind of a nuisance but no real threat.

My Mom was from just outside Sevierville.  I spent much of my summers on that farm off Chapman Highway.  I recall once my uncle decided to drive up Bluff Mountain for some reason, the group took two cars, the road was dirt/gravel and rough.  I've been through Wears Valley many times even back before it was a "highway".

My wife is disgusted with Pigeon Forge so that's off limits for me now.  I can recall when it was about 3 motels and the mill and a lot of corn.

I'm also kinda disgusted with that area now, probably not for the same reasons.

My cousin is a skilled equestrian and worked at the Dolly Parton Stampede thingy there for a while.  Started as one of the guys doing some of the horse action but then they decided they liked his voice and they "promoted" him to be the announcer/host (still on a horse, though).  He told me no matter how good of drivers people normally are, they leave all those skills at home when they go to Pigeon Forge.  Apparently there's a lot of accidents around there.

But, wasn't in PF when we collided, so at least at least during our brief foray to the town, we made it out unscathed.  My extended family used to tour through there in a giant motorhome, and I probably didn't give my grandpa and my uncle enough credit for maneuvering something like that around a place like Gatlinburg, which appears to be built for pedestrians or possibly someone with a skateboard.

Dolly Parton Stampede???

sounds very similar to Branson, MO - they have a lake

similar roads and tourist opportunities

the traffic near Branson makes me grumpy

There is one in Branson.  They both used to be called Dixie Stampede but got changed to her name in recent years.  It's a rodeo arena, except you have dinner served to you in your seats.  But it's the same dirt arena in the middle with people showing off on their horses doing....I dunno...horse stuff.  Surrounded by a stadium of people eating their food.  Apparently, it's a living.

Branson and Pigeon Forge are basically the same thing, imo.  The Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area probably has more rides and things to do, whereas Branson probably has more theater shows.  But they're similar.  My folks loved both of those places when I was growing up.

Yeah, these are more restaurant-style food, a main dish, sides, dessert.  I think you order off a menu from your seat, but it's been years since I've been to one.

We went to see the Lippazzaners perform in Vienna.  My wife thought is great.

I didn’t.  It was pricey too.  Rodeos are more interesting to me.

I go to the Austin Rodeo almost every year.  I volunteer for a charity that operates there.

I've been to the Houston Rodeo a couple times.  It's a totally different scale.
