Nebraska (0-2, 2-3) at #20 Michigan State (2-0, 4-0) Post Game
« on: September 21, 2021, 01:52:28 PM »
I think I can say that pretty safely, particularly when comparing the relative strength of the schools, no team has given MSU more problems in the past decade than Nebraska.

I have no desire to see them coming to East Lansing.

  • 2011 - Michigan State's lone regular season Big Ten loss was a 24-3 loss in Lincoln
  • 2012 - MSU blew a 10 point lead in the final 7 minutes, partly due to a defensive touchdown called back due to a block in the back 40 yards away from the play
  • 2013 - MSU won
  • 2014 - MSU led 27-3 early in the 4th, and 27-9 with 4 minutes left, yet Nebraska had the ball with a chance to win, until getting a game ending INT after a 43 yard gain
  • 2015 - only pre-CFP loss came in Lincoln to a 6-7 team, and a WR using some extra space to catch a pass
  • 2016 & 2017 - DNP
  • 2018 - blew a 6-0 4th quarter lead in the snow, after matt Dotson dropped a wide open pass that would have made it 10-0, but letting Nebraska kick three FGs in the final 11 minutes
  • 2019 & 2020 - DNP

I was at the 2012 game in EL. Really a wild game  Some very dubious calls by coaches, players and refs in that second half.

The penalty, if indeed it was a foul, not so sure,  seemed to be far away from the play.

Some weak PI call against MSU in the final drive.   Taylor Martinez had some brilliant runs in that game and his usual arm punts.   MSU in game drive decisions were head scratchers in 4th.

Tucker wants "The Woodshed" to be filled on Saturday night, a game the school is dubbing “Stripe The Stadium,” with alternating sections of fans wearing green and white shirts. The Spartans enter the 7 p.m. game with a 3-0 record and a No. 21 ranking in the coaches’ poll as they ride a wave of positive momentum both from supporters and at the national level.

Tucker also noted Nebraska only requested 2,500 tickets for the game.

“I wouldn’t expect there’d be one more Husker body in the stands than that. It’ll be (all) Spartans,” Tucker said. “It’ll be loud and we’ll be getting after it. It should be intense, it should be deafening – I anticipate that.”

I think doing that against a team that travels like Nebraska is not going to work so well

Series History: Nebraska vs. Michigan State
Saturday's matchup between Nebraska and Michigan State will be the 12th all-time between the schools, with Nebraska holding a 9-2 lead in the series. This matchup is the first between the schools in East Lansing since 2014, and just the fourth overall meeting at Michigan State.

In the last meeting, Nebraska defeated Michigan State, 9-6, in Lincoln. The game featured just five field goals and Nebraska's victory was its first without scoring a touchdown since a 3-0 victory over Kansas State in 1937.

The Huskers' 39-38 win over sixth-ranked Michigan State in 2015 marked just the third time in school history an unranked Nebraska team defeated a top-10 opponent. It was also the highest ranked team Nebraska had defeated in 14 seasons.

Michigan State was ranked in the top 15 in three straight trips to Lincoln (2011, 2013 and 2015), with Nebraska earning victories in two of those three games.

Nebraska rallied from 10 points down in the fourth quarter of its 2012 win in East Lansing, one of four second-half double-digit comebacks in 2012.

One of the teams was ranked in eight consecutive meetings from 1995 to 2015, with a pair of games (2011, 2014) matching two ranked teams.

The next scheduled meeting between the schools is set for 2023, also in East Lansing.

I haven't bought a Nebraska road game ticket from the school's block since 1995, and that's only because it was a lottery for the students.

I kind of assumed it was just students, donors, and families who went through those, particularly with how easy it is to buy tickets online through second-hand marketplace

Most of the Nebraska road games I attended with my family in the 80s, early 90s, we bought from the visiting school ticket office(Hawaii, Syracuse, Iowa St 7xs, Minnesota 2xs, Ucla, ASU, KU, Mizzou)  things didn't get difficult to go that route until Big 8 teams started pooling single game tickets for Nebraska games wo a 3 game buy.  That made secondary market very healthy.

Now it is about the only way I do it.  Though my road trips are mostly 'other' games these days.  Our Bama at A&M tix for this year were a 3 game buy this year, and we've already unloaded the other two with a modest markup.

One nice thing about being part of this forum is to learn about the experiences of other university teams than one's own. I was aware of Nebraska's domination of the series against Iowa, until recently, and Iowa's minimal margin over MSU in that series which is not explainable because MSU is generally a superior football program to Iowa's.
I was aware of Nebraska's wide left to go down in defeat to FSU on 1/1/94.
FSU has had wide left and wide right issues of its own in critical games, too.
You all informed me of a series dominance by Nebraska over MSU of which I had no awareness.

I think State rolls and wins by double digits. Nebraska did play OU tough last week, but not really sold on them as being an elite team. Rattler doesn't look anywhere near the type of player Baker or Kyler were at QB.

I would like to see Nebraska come back to the fold of the elite one day. Not sure it'll ever happen, but it'd be great for the sport and for the conference.

the Huskers aren't an elite team, not even in the West, but I don't think they need to be elite to keep this game within a score - single digits

Martinez will need to have a very good game as the Huskers will not run the ball vs Sparty

was referring to OU. Not sold on them as being elite.
