NCAA Football Cards
« on: July 10, 2019, 02:35:57 PM »
I went to a card shop with my friend and his son the other day, back visiting Gainesville and came across some licensed college cards.  They're boxed by school - there was OSU, USC, FSU, etc.  So I bought a Florida box.  To my surprise, it was vastly mostly football cards (I was afraid it'd be full of swimmers or softball players, etc), with some basketball and baseball players in it as well.
It's neat to have Gators cards from across eras.  I really wish they had these when I was growing up.  I'd also wish that now, they'd have mixed boxes so I could get stars from various schools in the same pack.

The Florida set also has each sports venue (Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, McKethan Stadium (baseball) and the basketball arena, as well as the Gator chomp and the mascots.  Those would vary by school, of course.

I'd be cool to open a pack with a Tebow and a Eddie George and a Marcus Allen.  Oh well.

Some examples of the different sports and a box of UM cards.  They're from 2015, apparently, but new to me.  It'd be great to not have to buy each individual school's box for variety's sake.

Notable players across sports, but there's many more than these listed...

Michigan's set:
The Big House
Fight Song
Glen Rice
Gerald Ford
Jake Long
Jalen Rose
Tom Brady
Trey Burke
Barry Larkin
Charles Woodson
-
Tennessee has:
Checkerboard endzone
Running through the T
Jason Witten
Bernard King
Eric Berry
Peyton Manning
Allan Houston
Chase Headley
RA Dickey
Todd Helton
-
Auburn:
Bo Jackson
Cam Newton
Frank Thomas
Chuck Person
Josh Donaldson
Tre Mason
-
OSU:
the Horseshoe
Buckeye helmet stickers
Cris Carter
James Laurinaitis
Jared Sullinger
Malcolm Jenkins
Jim Jackson
Paul Warfield
Rutherford B. Hayes sitting on a chair...at least the Ford UM card is him as a player
AJ Hawk
-
Georgia:
UGA the dog
Champ Bailey
Terrell Davis
Fran Tarkenton
Todd Gurley
Jarvis Jones
Dominique Wilkins
AJ Green
Matthew Stafford
-

Now what I don't get, is all these schools listed have 49 cards in their sets.  All of them.  Florida has 83 cards.  It's weird.
Florida-
The Swamp
The Chomp
Joakim Noah
Emmitt Smith
Fred Taylor
Percy Harvin
Tim Tebow
Mike Miller
Bradley Beal
Udonis Haslem
Al Horford
Chris Collinsworth
-
-
-
So basically, there's plenty more all-time greats they could add on going forward.

In D.A.R.E. the cop that taught the class was equipped with a stack of OSU FB cards every week. 20 total. All from the 89 season. Greg Frey, Bobby Olive, Jeff Graham, Carlos Snow, etc. The kicker Pat O'Morrow was my white whale. I was absent that day, and getting ahold of one really took some doing.

There was a Gators set in '88 from Burger King.  As Emmitt dominated in the NFL, there were a ton of counterfeits.  The lazy ones didn't have the Burger King logos on them, so they were easy to spot.  But the tougher ones, the ones people didn't consider, had the logos, but without the Trademark dot.

A guy was selling an Emmitt card for a bunch of money on ebay, but I had to let him know it was counterfeit.  It was unfortunate.  I have a counterfeit, but I paid a dollar for it.

As long as you drew from a diverse number of schools, and added 50 each year, you could wind up with a healthy catalog of all-time greats.  I wish this was a thing.

This would be a unique collectible for OU fans.
$28 gets it, on comc.com - some sports card site.
