Who are the Mt Rushmores for the perennial cellar dwellers? Vanderbilt, Oregon State, etc.
Vanderbilt:
HC Dan McGugin (100 years ago, when they were good)
QB Jay Cutler
WR Jordan Matthews
LB Zach Cunningham

Oregon State actually has some offensive dudes....neither Chad Ocho Johnson nor TJ Houschmanotgonnaworkhereanymore made their all-time team in Whoa Nellie.

I really wasn't going to criticize anyone's input on this, and I'm not exactly doing that here, but Jesus Christ people, why in the holy hell are we unable to separate college and NFL?!?  What is the mental block in understanding that they are completely different entities and that one can be the best ever in one and very pedestrian in the other?  There are a million examples.  Laser-arm guys getting drafted #1 despite being no one's All-American and winning fuck-all for their school.  Heisman winners dominating college football and not even getting drafted in the NFL.
They.  Are.  Separate.  Entities.
.
Now, to be fair to Mr. Len Dawson.  He was a 3rd-team All-American one year, when it was a sin to pass the ball.  He was good for his era, but not special.
And this is not a criticism, but I would think that a Purdue fan might mention a Kyle Orton or a Phipps or a Herrmann long before Len Dawson (of NFL fame) was brought up.  That's all.  Guys who were good in their era, but without the notoriety playing for pay gets you.

I love college football and with that comes a wish for everyone to respect that it's its own thing.  Because it is.  1st round busts still had great college careers.  And guys in Canton may or may not have made 2nd-team all-conference.

That's all.

Exactly why JJ Watt was not in contention for defense. One great year and then off to the league. Same goes for Russell at QB.

That's a whole other thing.  No one-year wonders?  That boots out Barry Sanders and Cam Newton.

Because you are asking for the greatest players at a program, and obviously players who excel at the highest level of the sport are going to be mentioned, since they are in fact the greatest football players. If you talked about the Mt. Rushmore of your high school, you might take the guy who became president of the United States, even if in high school he was kind of quiet and reserved.

Here, since I started the thread, I get to regulate the framework.
.
Please only include what a coach/player did while at the school(s).
There.
You can fall in line now.

I think Ricky Williams is underrated.
In his worst yards-per-carry season, he had 2,000 yards and 27 TDs, lol.

Just saw this looking back through the thread, but is he actually underrated?  He's #3 on the all-time list, #2 among backs playing for major schools, and he'd be an easy #1 if he hadn't spent his first 2 years as a fullback blocking for Priest Holmes.

But of course I don't really know how people outside of Austin approach his career.  If folks don't consider him as a strong contender for the best college football running back of all time, then I guess he's underrated, by stupid people.

I'd say Walker, Bo, Williams, Dayne, Dorsett, Charles White, Campbell and Taylor should all be in that discussion.

Taylor would have smashed a lot of the records had he stayed one more season. But I don't blame him for not staying, of course. I wouldn't either.

Taylor was the first to surpass Walker in terms of a 3-year career.  So from '82 to '19....37 years?
Jeez.

HC: Bowden
QB: Ward
WR: Warrick
CB: Sanders

FSU is hard because of some great RBs and defenders.
