So... Louisville opens as 25 point favorites...

Ouch.

If I were in Vegas I might take Purdue ATS in this one just because that seems like a BIG line for a P5-P5 matchup, no matter how bad Purdue was last year.

No surprise on the spread, but yeah, this will be a rough opener.

Getting pressure to Jackson is the recipe to throw the Ville off their game.  Purdue has an outside shot with the best LB crew we've seen in WL in years.

And of course everyone is hoping that Brohm has the offense at least capable of being a threat.

Formerly MisterBlack.  Cheers everyone!

These border rivals have only squared off once, and it was a 22-22 tie in 1987.

That game was in W Lafayette.

Can't believe they've only played once.

I can see Purdue getting worked in this game, because a team that can't get after Lamar Jackson can't win.  But if they can slow him down that's a pretty good sign for the team and playing functional defense.

I'm thinking like 58-10, especially if Blough's shoulder makes him a scratch.

Really sucks for Blough.  I think Sparks is an interesting option though (everyone loves the backup backup QB!).  Brohm has said he has packages for him at QB and has said he plans to use him at WR also.  Having Sparks at QB with the stable of RBs Purdue has will be exciting.  Seriously, can't believe how deep Purdue is at RB.

There are concerns from some LVille fans about the DL.  Apparently not a lot of experience up front, but the depth is a lot of freshman and sophomore.  Looks like LB has young depth as well.  If Purdue can put together an OL they may be able to run the ball and control the clock.

Interesting note on Lamar Jackson...the goal of the spring and summer has been to focus on staying in the pocket.  He was criticized last season for running if his 1st option was not available.  Petrino wanted him working through his progressions instead of using his legs.  NFL scouts slammed him for the same, questioning his ability at the next level.

Purdue has the talent to be disruptive on the front 7, especially at LB.  They also switched back to a 4-3 this year, which will get their best players on the field.  The Boilers problem last year wasn't a lack a playmakers, it was a lack of depth.  The Louisville OL was a problem down the stretch last season, and they are a question mark this year.  Could get interesting if Jackson is trying hone is pocket skills against a perceived weak Purdue front 7.

Louisville big. Lamar Jackson is a one man freak show. He will basically do whatever he wants whenever he wants this game.

think the knock on Lamar Jackson come NFL draft time will be his body. Don't know what he's listed at, but much like the last big time Louisville QB- Teddy Bridgewater- he looks like a QB in a WR's body- long, lean, slender. Not every QB prospect is going to be built like a Cam Newton or Big Ben, those are rare breeds, but usually 1st round QBs are at least built like Brady (now- not combine Brady) or Rodgers. Have to be built to take the pounding of a 16 game NFL season plus pre-season and playoffs.

NFL scouts like his athletic ability, but have slammed his technique as a QB.  He doesn't go through his progressions, or read the defense particularly well.  He tends to run if his first man isn't open, which has obviously been wildly successful at the college level, but won't translate in the pro's.  He also tends to lock his front leg, and plants himself, which hurts accuracy and touch.

I agree, when he's on his game, Louisville can beat anyone in the ACC.  Pocket passing is not his game though.  He takes most snaps from pistol or shotgun.

Well, that was nice. Even in a loss, the team looked competitive.

Question is who is our QB going forward? Blough looked crisp, throwing for just under 70% completion rate, and putting the ball on target in general. But he threw 2 picks. Sindelar looked terrible early, but better when he came into the game late. He's got a cannon for an arm but had trouble with accuracy.

And can we get the running game on track? With our stable of great RBs, we need to be able to run.

I was impressed with the defense compared to what Purdue's defense has been the last ~!0 years (since spack left).  I saw some real fundamentals that have been missing for a long time.

Got a ways to go, but way better than where we've been.  Now if we could just get some talent and depth...

Is it too early to say I love this coaching staff?  After only 1 game it seems obvious that Brohm + co. are a MAJOR upgrade from Hazel.  He gets it.  He gets max effort from his players.  It was sloppy, but fun to watch.  I have no doubt Brohm was the right hire.

Special teams needs a ton of work.  Punt and kick coverage was bad.  Jones fumbled a kick return.  There were a couple fielded kicks that should have went out of bounds.

OL was surprisingly good, at least better than the last few years.  QBs had time to throw.  Run game needs more use/work.  I can't wait to see this pass game by mid season.  Brohms scheme will work once everyone is on the same page.  I love the vertical pass game.  QBs need to make better decisions, 4 picks won't cut it, should come with experience in the system.  Looks like we have a QB controversy now.  I think Blough is the better leader, while Sindelar throws a better ball.

Even though the defense was shredded by Jackson, they made crucial plays at key times.  Front 7 was disruptive, I really think they are vastly underrated.  2 forced fumbles were huge.  Covering the middle of the field is still a problem.

This was a sloppy game by both teams.  Purdue was only a couple key plays from winning this game (Phillips dropped a sure TD that was perfectly thrown, Blough pick 6 swing the momentum).  The same could also be said for Louisville though.

I think I already have a bromance for DC Nick Holt.  Dude is a bad ass, constantly fired up and getting on his players.  He's so much of a bad ass he doesn't need a mustache at Purdue, or any hair for that matter.

Hang on, this is going to be a fun rebuild.
