Sure it is, they don't score at all in OT One.  They tie after regular 4-4.

I had to think about it but I'm fairly certain that is not mathematically possible.

I guess if Rutgers somehow gave up a safety on a drive that started at the Iowa 25.

It is mathemagically possible, but very unlikely. That said, consider:

2004/10/23  Iowa 6 - Penn State    4
1939/11/04  Iowa 4 - Purdue    0

Iowa has been involved in some defensive baseball score battles.

I would guess a safety has never been scored in OT in any football game.

Be pretty tough in HS too.  When I played in HS possessions in OT started at the opponents’ 10.  I was at a game a couple weeks ago and they now start at the OPP 20.

HS would be a much larger universe obviously.  I still doubt a safety has ever happened on the record in OT.

It would be neat if one had though.

Only three regular-season NFL games have ever ended in overtime with a safety: in 1989 when the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Los Angeles Rams 23–21 when Mike Merriweather blocked a punt into the end zone, in 2004 when the Chicago Bears defeated the Tennessee Titans 19–17 when Billy Volek fumbled in his own end zone ...

I forgot the NFL rules are different.

The Iowa defense outscored the Iowa offense 14-13, and outscored Rutgers 14-10.
Rutgers had 361 total yards which was a lot for the Iowa defense to give up.
Iowa's offense had 277-yards, which is not bad considering this offense is one of FBS's worst offenses. But it is still bad considering other offenses in the FBS.
Iowa's kicker, Drew Stevens, started the year as 2nd team kicker. Today, he kicked 2 field goals, and for his final field goal used the entire width of the goal posts to bank it in off the left goal post from 51-yards. Iowa has a history of winning games the past 40 years thanks to late field goals, so this is a good omen for Iowa.
Coming into this one, I thought Rutgers had about an even chance of winning. By the 4th quarter you would not have known it was a sell-out in Piscataway.

Technically a scoreless tie could reach a third (+) overtime under the new rules where you just alternate 2-point conversion tries after that, so you could score a 1-point safety, and win 1-0.

This game reminded me a lot of the Iowa-MD game last year.  Iowa heading to east coast early in conference play with a solid defense and doubts about offense.  Defense has key takeaways and scores early.  Iowa's offense looks surprisingly effective when it gets a lead,  and Iowa goes on to dominant victory.

I think on the Iowa message boards there was a pre-season poll how many games would the defense actually out-score the offense.  I think the consensus was 2 games,  but some were arguing it could be as many as 4 games.

Now I am thinking it could be as many as 6 games this year where the defense outscores the offense.
