Raider fan?  Ewwwwwww
Born and raised in Walnut Creek, CA.

It's really her only fault.

Went to St. Cloud State in Minnesota, but I'm truly thankful she didn't go my school's most hated rivel. ;)

I've even given thought to retiring there.
We did too, a while back, spent some time looking around.  The suburbs were typical, really, not much walkable.  Downtown was not appealing.  There might be a golf oriented area that would be OK for golfers.  No income tax state.

We considered basically everywhere we traveled in the US.  My wife is a very firm NO on living in France, which is interesting.  We take a lot for granted.

How's the property taxes, I wonder?

I've always thought as much as I don't want to, retiring in Louisiana might be a good way to go.  Property taxes are so low they are effectively negligible, and you can get more housing/land for your money than in many other places.

I can't figure out how anybody ever retires in Texas, with the property taxes we have here.

"Texas" is "taxes" with the vowels inverted.  Although we don't have income or grocery tax here, which is nice for the working years.

That's pretty much our setup when we go camping. :)

Went out in tent, little coleman stoves and one propane heater between 3 of us.Roughed it in Ohio Wayne National Forest, very Deep Woods - December Deer Camp, got greeted with sleet and rain on/off from Sunday - Thursday.Temps stayed from 28-40 Never really got dry once both sets of Walls/Carhart Coveralls got damp needed a cabin, hotel room for that.Even with using polypropylene underwear and wool over that, when it's 20/30s and your damp or wet game-set-match.Of course the deer weren't moving much either so you had to huff it thru the brush to push them out that just got you more soaked. So we did it just to prove we were roughing it as real Nanooks of the North do. Eating mostly jerky and smoked salmon/trout and Burbot caught in Lake Erie and Ontario - Freaking waste of vacation time is what it was

Unless we scrap that plan entirely, buy some property on a tropical island in the Caribbean, and cut ties from all you gringos forever.

About half the national average or so. One of my friends just moved there from here, and they are comparable to here.

Cheap flights and lodging and transportation for friends and family to visit or for me to travel to see them
Plenty of golf courses and no snow, to speak of
No water either, the resevoirs are drying up,the hell is everyone portaling

Another thing to consider:

9 States With No Income Tax (investopedia.com)

Some states tax retirement income too - pensions and social security. Gotta watch out for those too.

I've done plenty of tent-camping in my time. Still do several times per year when going with my son and his Boy Scout troop.

But our family setup is a little different.

In fact,  my buddy Bald Greg (some of you met him here in Austin years ago) who we often go camping with, has a really good projector and a large blow-up movie screen, so we'll often show movies for the kids at night, whilst out camping.  This year we'll be winter camping from 12/26 thru 1/1, and it's likely we'll also watch some of the evening bowl games on the big blowup screen.

I will say that while the tax burden in Florida is VERY low, insurance is VERY high.

We carry 300/300 on everything as that is required to have the umbrella coverage.

Still, $2,100/year for one car is a lot - almost double what we paid up North for TWO cars (both M-B).

$1,100/year for a 26' boat here. $750/year up North for a 40' boat.

$5,000+/year here for the house (have not got the new bill after Ian yet). $1,200/year for a comparably valued home up North.

So that comes to roughly $5K more per year than up there, but my property taxes here are 1/5 of what I paid up there. We are ahead by far, but I'm worried about that new home insurance bill.

Damn back in the day we made our own waffles in those cast forms ya stuck in the fire. One of the scout leaders was a butcher. He froze the cheap cuts saved from the dumpster and we would take turns grinding them up with the old hand crank grinder - usually twice. But it made good Sloppy Joes,Goulash & Chili for the troup. Weather permitting we had snow shoes and cross country skis that actually looked more like boards they pulled off the privy in the state park. Mostly did orienteering in the winter woods, not as challenging when you can follow footprints back to camp though.Only entertainment as I recall was scout leaders bringing their Philco radios and guitars. They sang like elk bellowing after getting their nads caught in a barbed wire fence - America's got talent. That was enough roughing it for me.....until deer camp

Revenue has to come from somewhere.  Tourists are a good target if you have enough of'em.

Our sales tax here is 8.9%.  We get a 10% discount if we dine in the local area, so that offsets it.  It hits groceries also.  My property tax is about the same rate as it was in Cincy but the property is about double the value.  No state income taxes on the first $130 K retirement income.  State income tax rates are a bit higher than they are in Ohio, but they are drifting down now.  My kid told me property taxes on this place in Austin would be 2.5X higher.

The mayor in office when we moved here like to travel around the world, pretty extravagantly.  The current one doesn't seem to, or it doesn't get reported.  Maybe he's OK.  I think they all appointed their "cousins" to various positions with high salaries.

0 days in Vegas is already too many for me.

I try to avoid going there unless there's something I can't do anywhere else. I.e. when we went to Vegas for Adele, we left Saturday morning, drove in, had dinner, saw the show, and we were on the road headed back home by ~8 AM Sunday morning.

It's an outrageous city full of outrageous people and I have very little use for it.
B.R.A.D. is correct, though I have heard some of the full-time residents are just fine folk. The visitors and people who love visiting, just eye rolls.

I had a bachelor party that was supposed to be there, with one person trying to get it out of hand. Best outcome of the pandemic was losing that.
