Umm, just for the record, you forgot the state that has more coastline than California and Florida combined.
That's the place to be for King Crab, for sure.

In fairness, something like 30% of this country couldn't point to where Texas is on a map of the United States, so not knowing whether it is "land-locked" or not isn't exactly surprising.
He had been living in Texas for about 3 years at the time.  I mean, if you're trying to make an argument against him being a complete dumbass, you're not really succeeding...

Beautiful area regardless.

And more coastline than Montana.

Not arguing he's not a dumbass, just arguing that our nation is filled with people who are extremely ignorant of geography, regardless of whether they are coastal elite or not.

I don't know if I've said this story here or not, but every Halloween I ask the kids that come to our house (that are over age 12 or so) to name the capitol cities of states I name.  If they get it right, they get double candy.  I live in a pretty nice suburb neighborhood, so I probably get about 40 to 50 kids over aged 12 per year (depending on weather).

I would say that the success rate is probably in the 10 to 15% range (and we're talking about easier examples like Indiana and Michigan, not Vermont or Montana).  Even worse, the amount of answers of a different state (ie. I ask what the capitol of California is and get an answer of "Nevada") is almost as high as correct answers (5 to 10%).

It truly makes me scared for the future of our society.

I used to give quizzes in the lab courses I taught, and I'd include an extra credit question, like "When did the Civil War begin in the US?".  I'd get answers from 1500 to 1950.

These kids were mostly quite smart, many headed to medical school in the upper level courses.  History and geography would stump nearly all of them.

They did better on the tough technical questions, but they had studied and memorized.

Looked it up, and Texas is actually 6th.  Louisiana has them beat (which is a little surprising until you remember that the New Orleans / Mississippi delta area is huge morass of indentions that increase the measurable coastline distance significantly).

I was looking at it as the bird flies and did not consider states that are not in the Lower 48.

I've been to Indianapolis. Nice town if a little boring.

Still haven't made it to Michiganapolis.
