A lot of Republican voters liked what Rep. Gaetz was saying:  return to the regular order budgeting process and no more giant pork saturated Omnibus bills just before Christmas.
I would say voters aren't really sending coherent messages. Most people would like regular work by Congress to resume, but also they tend to want Republicans/Democrats to never win. Compromise and legislate and also kill the other party.

He's definitely not moderate but he's also not ultra-right.

And he has lost some support here, including some of mine, since the landslide win.

I'm sure you've noticed.

I haven't been following the politics on this board to be honest.

He certainly tries to pander to far right conservative voters.  It's a tactic he stole from Trump, and he has done a poor job of recreating the strategy.

You know how it is 847.  If you think weird things like crime should be illegal, and parents should have a voice in the materials that are being taught to their child- you’re a bogeyman right winger. Lol

I have 2 kids in elementary school.  My daughter has 2 friends whose parents both teach.  We hang out with those teachers and their teacher friends.

All the nonsense about what conservatives say is trying to be taught in school is pure bs.  It simply is not happening.

It's a scare tactic to get you to go out and vote for Republicans.  Conservative leaders in our state have manufactured it, and the media has blown it out of proportion.

I've lived in Florida for 22 years now and this is the absolute worst condition this state has ever been in politically.

Does he, though?  Or is he just a conservative politician?

If he's done a "poor job of recreating that strategy" could it be because he's not actually trying to do so?

You are certainly entitled to your opinion

I just need to ignore the factual evidence I see every single day, showing things in different school districts that parents do not agree with and the fights that go on between the school boards and the parents.  I don’t care what any politician says, but I see what I see.  And for the record, I don’t blame the teachers.

of course, people vote with their feet in their wallets, and if they’re voting on the state of Florida, you’re definitely in the substantial minority on your opinion.

I would also add your about phase 2 or three behind.  The “ oh- the bogeyman is just making it up to scare you” memo and narrative has passed.

They are now in the “ parents who disagreed are domestic terrorists, and we don’t care what you think because the school board knows better than parents do” phase- openly and proudly.
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

He was certainly trying to do so, and it backfired.  Let me preface this by saying that I'm definitely not a Trump supporter.

Trump at least has some personality.  DeSantis has the personality of a warm corpse.  He can't sell anything.

He was late to announce his run for President.  Trump was already out there verbally abusing him, and DeSantis had to play catch up.

A few things he did to pander to the far right (or at least the right wingers that are beyond moderate)...

He passed a very restrictive abortion ban in Florida.  He didn't realize it alienated a lot of conservative women voters.  He lost some major donors over this as well.  He publicly endorsed it to try to secure religious voters in Iowa.

He spoke in favor of cutting Medicare, Social Security, and raising the retirement age.  Which, of course, pissed off senior conservative voters.  Trump took advantage and bashed him for it.

He declared a "War on Woke".  Whatever that means.  Which is funny, because the woke culture is born out of black culture and the black experience in America.  So essentially DeSantis declared war on black culture.  He doesn't know any better, of course, because he's pandering to a certain crowd.

He declared war on Disney over their rights to free speech.  He then used his power as governor to punish them over it.  He accused them of the typical far right allegations of child grooming, etc.

Speaking of using government power...DeSantis has also taken control of the state’s environmental protection agency.  He's deployed our state’s police force out of state.  He's bussed and flown immigrants to other states. He created a law enforcement team to monitor voting.  He removed democratically elected local prosecutors.  He staged the takeover of a liberal arts college.

All of those actions just seem to scream for attention from the far right, or right of center, conservatives

Every 6-8 years, school districts tend to buy a new reading or math curriculum.  They get a few different companies to send preview packs of their materials.  Admin and teachers review them and pick the one that makes sense.

Those chosen materials are then REQUIRED to be on display for ANYONE to check out/review for at least 2 weeks before being approved by the school board.

No one ever checks them out.  No one ever reviews them.  Yet there they sit, for 2 weeks, alone and isolated.  Because it's required.
The scare tactic bullshit you hear about are individual cases of individual teachers or schools breaking the rules.  These individuals are a handful out of MILLIONS of teachers, staff, admin across the country.

Yes, vending machines kill 2-3 people every year.  No, you should not live in fear of them.

1. 6-week (heartbeat) ban. It was at 15 weeks. My wife says 6. She's given birth. Lots of states have a complete ban, and lots of states have a full-term, for comparison.

As an adopted kid, I'd prefer that women do not abort and then later give their child up for adoption. People are lined up to adopt kids. But who am I to tell someone what to do with their body? I wish this was not a political topic.

2. Those things need to be fixed, right? So, what do you do?

As far as raising the retirement age, that would not piss off seniors because he said he would raise the age for people under 40. Seniors are older than 40.

3. All governors have control over the state EPA - and all state agencies/departments. He didn't take control. He already had it.

I'm not going to speak to the rest of your post, but I will generally say that curriculums for K-5 should be reading, writing, math and science. Nothing more.

Disney spoke out against that idea. Why?

Not to change the subject, but I am surprised that the US will now continue to rightly build a border wall.

What changed?

The good news is, it's pouring rain at my house for the first time since June 21st.  We've already had 1.5" since 2 AM.

The bad news, my 16yo daughter is driving to school alone for the first time ever today.  And because it never rains here, she has almost no experience driving in the rain. BUT, she did okay and got to school fine.  Good thing it's only like 0.4 miles away.

Lots of those roads will be very slippery. Glad she's close to home.

This made some news for obvious reasons, but of course it's a small section of "barrier", note they don't want to refer to it as a wall.

Trump gives the game away about his U.S.-Mexico ‘border wall’ (msnbc.com)

I glance at MSNBC for "entertainment", but this piece is largely my own view.
