According to this, the top one percent own 18.6% of the total wealth in the US.  The 50-99% group owns over 66%.  That second group would include high income earners, and thus folks who pay income taxes.  This is why Buffet says he pays a lower tax rate than his secretary.  He or she earns a nice income I'd guess.  He only has unearned income of any consequence, maybe he gets a salary but it's inconsequential to his wealth.

When you are poorer, you often face significant barriers to getting wealthier.  You take out loans, or car leases, and can never really get ahead of the game without significant sacrifice.  You may have to shop at more expensive stores because of location and inability to access a "walmart".  You can't really buy in bulk.

You specified middle and upper-middle.  That'd be more like the 30-60%, right?

I mentioned they had more wealth than the top one percent.  I stated that the middle and upper middle get clipped, not the one percent.  You can define middle and upper middle however you wish.

Folks who rely on earned income get clipped in income taxes.  Those who don't, don't care.
