And they're not paid in AZ.  Where I live.  And in 88% of all states.  But somehow you "got me" there?

They aren't?

This is an honest question, not trying to mix in this debate, this just surprised. 

For reference, in Ohio they are paid. To be fair the compensation is nominal for most. I *THINK* some very large districts have significant compensation but in Suburban districts like mine the compensation is nominal.

FWIW, I've long said that School Board is a job I wouldn't wish on anyone. 

It is like being the long snapper. Nobody ever says "Our team is doing great because every time we need to punt that @OrangeAfroMan puts the ball right in the punter's hands." People only ever talk about the long snapper when he launches one over the punter's head. School Board is the same way.

That’s true, but you also have people screaming bloody murder about the perfectly acceptable snaps. I would not enjoy that job.
