Prices are up a decent bit here. Maybe $.30 or $.40 a gallon.

Interestingly, the price of the bread I usually buy has dropped, which is unusual. And for some reason flight prices are down considerably. Not sure if that’s a seasonal thing.

South Dakota broke the record for the lowest unemployment rate in the U.S., registering 1.8 percent in June.

The state shares the new record with New Hampshire. The national jobless rate in June was 3.6 percent, down from 3.7 percent the previous month and the same as a year ago.

The unemployment rate for the Sioux Falls metro area in June was unchanged at 1.7 percent – its record-tying low and the lowest in the country along with four metropolitan areas in New England.

The state has more than 24,000 job openings, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

In June, Gov. Kristi Noem started a Freedom Works Here national workforce recruitment advertising campaign, leading to more than 3,500 applicants by late July, according to the governor’s office. Of those, 675 are in the final stages of moving to South Dakota. The most applications have come from California at 603, Texas at 260, Florida at 245, Minnesota at 208 and New York at 148.

This month, the Labor Department is offering help to businesses and those working for jobs.

It's relevant to a lot of people.

We're at $3.88 here, for regular. 91 is $4.38, which is what we need.

These are WaWa prices. They are generally the cheapest.
Well, it might be relevant, but for many, short-term fluctuations in gas prices aren't very actionable.

Higher prices can be addressed in multiple ways:

  • Drive less (or carpool, or use annoying af strategies like hypermiling).
  • Drive the same amount, economize elsewhere.
  • Ride it out with higher monthly costs hoping it drops.

I left off "buy a higher mpg vehicle" because while that might have long-term benefit, it usually doesn't pencil out for seasonal or short-term price jumps.

But OAM's point is that for MANY people in this world, driving is a necessity for work, school, childcare, daily life, etc. Many have limited ability to reduce their overall monthly mileage. For those people, it doesn't matter what the cost is, because you simply have to pay it. It's relevant in that you feel it in the pocketbook, but not relevant in that there's much you can do about it.

Make sure your tires are properly inflated, drive a bit slower and smoother, avoid use of AC when possible, park in shade ...

Normal gas stations here are $3.50 to $3.99 (near the freeways).  I don't know where Costco is now, probably $3.30.

If you're paycheck to paycheck, it matters.

It certainly doesn't affect me (or probably any of us here) at all, but it matters to some.

avoid use of AC when possible
BTW one change that occurred over the last maybe decade+ is that due to aerodynamic drag, it's now more efficient for most cars (I assume at highway speed) to operate with the windows closed and the AC on, than the AC off and the windows open.

I don't have data on it, but my guess would be that around-town driving is far more affected by the constant acceleration/deceleration than running the AC.

So I highly doubt the use of AC makes much of a dent either way.

AC doesn't these days, but around town it might save 0.2 mpg or so, maybe, not at freeway speeds.

Driving smoothly probably makes more difference.  i routinely see a red light ahead of me and other drivers seem to race to it and then hit the brakes, often when I get there the light is green and I don't have to stop.

Yeah, if you really want to conserve gas, you should be looking into hypermiling.

Just be aware that everyone else on the road will want to kill you, slowly, and painfully.

yeah I used to work with a guy who drove like that. He was an extremist.  I went to lunch one day with him, in his car, and it was  the first and last time I ever did THAT.

PS At ATL: New Private Luxury Airport Facility - One Mile at a Time

I  guess there is a market for this?

You can also become a member of PS, which costs $4,850 per year, and then you can expect to pay:
  • $750 per person to use The Salon
  • $3,550 for up to four people to use a Private Suite
