Yes, and it's also true that there are some distinct ethnic markers of certain Jewish lineages. For a long time, whether due to their choice or the social histories BAB mentions, Jewish cultures have been rather insular without a tremendous amount of mixing with Gentiles.

For example, 23andMe says I'm 22.5% Ashkenazi Jewish. With my maternal grandmother being Jewish (and my other grandparents not), she likely would have been nearly 100% if you tested her DNA. My wife's best friend is pretty much 100% Sephardic Jew (I believe, obv I haven't looked at her 23andMe).

So it's more than just a religious thing, it's got ethnicity built in.

Euro-Jews are White, Middle Eastern Jews are brown, and Ethiopian Jews are Black. They didn't get that way by not mixing with the locals. That bloodline got busted a long time ago.
