"Useless" may not be the best term. And you're right, 2/3 is probably WAY too high of a number. But I think we have to ask "why is a student going to college, and is going to college necessary for their future life beyond degree requirements of employers?"

How many students would be better served with four years of job experience and income rather than 4 years of college and a lot of debt to pay off?

To that last part, I suppose it depends the job. Into a lesser extent the person.

I think college has more and more become a racket. And the gap years element does have value, but not what we pay for it. Granted, you then would like other gap years mechanisms, which we have some of, but maybe not enough.

I recall neighbors asking me where my son was going to college, not whether, but where.  It was an expectation.  I told one lady he was spending the summer at some French beach resort that had a good exercise program, riflry, climbing, swimming, and he would get paid for it.

It's what most kids figure they should do rather than work.  I had a gf in HS who was pretty smart and wasn't interested in college, she had a job as a telephone operator and was just sticking with that.  A lot of girls were going for that MRS. degree.

Yes, as some jobs are much less amenable to "on the job training" than others. Engineering, medicine, law, the hard sciences (and even the soft ones*), etc. Some things you have to have studied the prerequisite material to be able to apply it in practice.

I'd say there are a LOT of jobs that employers are requiring degrees for, however, that actually don't really need them.

 * Re: the soft sciences, it's along the idea that if you want a job in the social sciences, actually studying it in college is a leg up. But if you grow up to be an office manager, getting a sociology degree is probably a lot less relevant.

If you don't understand the need for a college degree, go try finding a decent-paying career where you aren't working with your hands.

Then you'll go to the nearest college and enroll.

Is someone here questioning the need for a college degree?  I could have missed it.

Yes.

I'm saying that there are jobs out there that require a college degree but that the degree is not actually necessary to perform the job. Which by doing so saddles a student with 4 years of wasted earnings potential (and likely lots of debt) in order to get that unnecessary degree, to get a job where the degree is irrelevant.

There is nothing wrong with working with your hands. We need more of those people. Electricians. Plumbers. Welders. And on and on.

You don't need a fine arts degree to do those jobs. A certificate or AAS would do it - or simply OTJ training.

I think we agree that some/many jobs don't really require a college degree in order for the job to be performed well.  That isn't the same as claiming a college degree is not needed as a broad generalization.  I suspect "we" are in basic agreement and quibbling over terminology (my bad).

You shouldn't need a college degree to sell insurance, or be an HOA manager.  But in today's world in the US, you do often as not.

Too many of us go to college than would be ideal.

Many college degrees are not useful (beyond getting your foot in the door).

College have become a racket.

Of course there's nothing wrong with it, but it's not for everyone.
There's a LARGE subset of people who don't just fall into 'getting a college degree' or 'works with their hands.'

It’s a good shift.

I will be interested to see if we develop better mechanisms to connect young people to jobs and train them and more efficient ways.

One issues is that many 18-year-olds are useless morons. And when they get put in zero-structure situations, the output is not what you would like. For all of its drawbacks and its expenses, college does provide a space for a lot of people to fail in ways that help them down the line.

Beyond apprenticeships and such, probably more military participation and a greater social acceptance of living at home past 20 would be helpful.

I was a useless 18 year old moron, I'm often surprised I got through.
