so do you want many parties like France has

nothing wrong with a two party system

plus these parties change over time

The dem party of today is no where the same party back in JFKs day
I sure wish both parties would change drastically for the better
I don't think they will.
I agree with Cincy........ a 3rd party has no chance
It's sad

Why do you suppose anyone 70+ years old wants to stay in Congress?  Or politics of any sort?

not sure why having more then two parties would change things

having 2 people in a room arguing is not made better by putting a 3rd person in the romm also arguing

I think the idea is not to have three parties, but to see some new party emerge and replace one.

Ask someone who thinks it would solve anything.

It's highly improbable in my view, so not really worth notioning.  But some folks think a magical different major party would be more ... sensible.  I think if somehow magically it was initially, in ten years it wouldn't be.  It's the System that causes this.

I agree with the first part but not sure what system you are talking about

To answer this, I think we first need to separate "Congress" into it's components. The House and The Senate are VERY different functionally.

In the House there are 435 Representatives which would be inherently unwieldy so to deal with that the House is very much controlled by the leadership. An individual Representative cannot even speak on an issue without being permitted to do so by leadership. Consequently, in the House there are VAST differences in power between high ranking members of leadership and lowly freshman Representatives.

In the Senate there are 100 Senators and they can each more-or-less do their own thing. Each Senator has a right to the floor and only a 3/5 majority can shut them up. Consequently the difference in power between the most and least powerful Senator is much less significant.

In the House I imagine that a lot of times when someone wants to stay it is largely because they know how long it took to get into a position of power and now that they have it, they want to do something with it.

Essentially there is very little point in serving two or three terms in Congress.

My guess is folks love being in Congress because of the status is affords them.  They get treated as "important people", and that's something meaningful to a lot of humans.

It can be more important than money.

is this just a view into why someone wants to go into politics or do you have an additional point to make

I think some go into politics to "do good".  I have known a few of these personally.  I think the ones who stay in Congress for decades get addicted to "being somebody".  They can't imagine life without it.

I know a few folks at work who were like that.  They were "somebodys" at work, when retired, they would be just Ol' Joe Codger, what's your handicap?  My former boss is still there working.  Why?  Money?  He'd have plenty.

having 2 people in a room arguing is not made better by putting a 3rd person in the romm also arguing
the 3rd person might hopefully be motivated to do something besides arguing

the 2 people in the room have shown for decades, that's mostly what they do w/o any decent work towards improving the country for the people
hell, I don't care how many it is, one, two, three, or more parties.
The American people deserve at least one party that will work for them.
the two we have had for decades are deplorable at best.
We ALL want a change.  This is why Obama and Trump where elected.  Hoping for change.

The two parties in power obviously do NOT want change.
They are both fat and happy

I understand your point and agree some folks like the power now is this bad and if so what can be done about it

this is not limited to elected positions as there are many in the private who like the power it gives them

so is this bad
