I have a notion that autonomous private vehicles will make HSR irrelevant.
yup, I'm sure the politicians will find a way to launder $$$ through autonomous private vehicles

The HSR is a state law creation. The Feds have next to nothing to do with it (except that the State wants more money from the feds). So for people opposed to HSR in California, they should hail Pelosi as a hero for not dedicating a ton of money to it from the federal budget (which is what the state was expecting).

HSR will work in Florida, as most people who move here are from places with rail services.

I would use it a lot, for sure.

I've used the Brightline plenty already. It's definitely worth it for a day trip down to Miami just to avoid the horrific soul crushing traffic. I'll probably be taking it to Orlando every once in awhile once that route opens.

When we lived in Chicago, we'd fly to Miami to get on cruises. After the cruises, we'd take the cruise shuttle to MIA and get on the Brightline. We have friends in West Palm, so we'd visit them before heading back to Chicago, from PBI.

So much better to fly PBI over MIA or FLL.

When we lived in Chicago, we used rail a LOT. I used to have an office downtown, so it was the way to go for sure. We lived 2 blocks from a train station, which was even better.

Would love to be able to get to Miami and Fort via rail. Driving Alligator Alley really... sucks.

Brightline is barely HSR, as defined with a speed of at least 125 mph.  But really, that speed is adequate, and the cost of going 250 mph is really high.

If you have at grade crossings, you are limited to 79 mph max, and lower in congested areas.

The Accela line in the NE works pretty well at 125 mph.

Autonomous vehicles have been proclaimed as the solution to traffic jams for 30 years. Elon is finding out the hard way that autonomous in the field is a lot harder than it looks. Besides, it doesn't change the real estate problem.

The only place autonomous works smashingly well is on fixed, grade-separated guideways. See a bunch of airport shuttles and the Vancouver SkyTrain.

Autonmous should improve the traffic density on freeways, and could plausibly allow much higher speeds.  I can't see Americans abandoning their private vehicles.

And buses have been proclaimed as the solution to traffic jams for a lot more than 30 years.

But in a lot of geos, people simply don't want to ride them.
