OPEC produces 40% of the worlds oil and 60% of all worlds oil exports. So by default they'll have the most influence over price.

Need the Saudis on your side if you want to try to drive the price up or down. Saudis refuse to even talk to the current guy. They did what the old guy told them to every now and then. New guy can't even get them on the phone. Embarrassing.
Maybe we should chop us some dissidents and ship them over as an act of goodwill.

(Did what the old guy asked, would be the correct phrasing)

Now the Dems have come up with a plan the ease the pain of increased gas prices

They want to tax "excess profits" of oil companies and send it to Americans

Sounds logical - just reduce incentive for oil companies to find and drill oil

that ought to work out great
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

Saudis have been doing that type of horrendous shit for oh, ever. Hasn't stopped America from being all BFF with them for over 70 years. Ever step foot in DC? How many universities there have entire buildings or monuments donated by the kingdom?

They are a family dictatorship stuck in the stone age. We helped keep them in power with our military, intelligence services, and arms sales. They made sure we had access to their oil and that money from their oil profits would flow to London and New York and that world oil trade was denominated in US dollars. That's all it's ever been about. They scratch our back, we scratch theirs.

Chopping up a dissident is childs play for them, they do that shit for breakfast. These people crucify and behead people in public on the daily, women are virtually slaves there, they execute people for being gay, and they have completely destroyed Yemen and turned it into the worst humanitarian crisis on planet earth. They export Wahhabism- the most vile extreme form of Islam- (basically terrorism) all over the world and have done so to the tune of $100 billion over the last 40 years. 16 of the 19 9/11 hijackers were from....Saudi Arabia. Osama Bin Laden was from...Saudi Arabia! And a very prominent and wealthy Saudi family with close ties to the Saudi crown at that. There was even reporting done by legendary investigative reporter Sy Hersh that the Saudis were paying the ISI to keep Bin Laden hidden on house arrest in Pakistan.

The only reason anyone in US pretended to give a squirt of piss about Jamal Khashoggi is because he lived in America for about year and worked for the Washington Post for 6 months. It's kind of embarrassing to be honest with you. Let's all pretend to care now!

The government, obviously.  And, any way they feel like.

That's just part of their culture. Objecting to it is Islamophobic.

speaking of our Saudi friends.....cool little news segment where the head of religious police talks about the mass execution of 81 heretics. Also kinda funny: Russia Oligarch bad! Sell that soccer team! Saudi royal family member good! you can buy that team for $3.5 billion!

Also...Saudis continue to laugh at and disrespect Biden. Saudis just invited Xi to an official state visit of the kingdom. Nice.

This is not shocking to me at all. Russia's dirty money did a lot of harm over there. I wonder how much comes here.

Strolled through the botanical garden today, the tulips showed some damage from the freeze.

I don't see how you can title it being "duped" when everyone knew it was happening at the time, and had been happening for years and years, for over a decade.

They went in eyes wide open.  They just didn't think that becoming heavily reliant on energy from Putin's Russia was any big deal.

In many ways it's quite similar to how the US has become so heavily dependent on manufacturing, critical supply chain elements, and critical raw materials, coming from China.  We knew how heavily dependent we'd become, we just didn't see it as a big deal.

A lot of people-- people that make the most important decisions for the US corporations and government-- still don't understand that it's a big deal.
