Nuclear Energy Among the Least Popular Sources of Power in the U.S., Polling Shows (morningconsult.com)

The folks most incensed about climate change tend to be the folks most against nuclear power.

Yeah, even though it's easily the most feasible power source that SHOULDN'T adversely affect the environment.

Nuclear incidents can only happen when like 8 major things go wrong.
But people watched the HBO series Chernobyl, so they're all experts now.  That showed how a bunch of things had to go wrong for that to happen.
Fukushima had a bunch of things go wrong, of which some were easily avoidable, if not for human error.

Great news for pro-nuclear people - now Russia's turned off the power to a plant in Ukraine.....great.  I'm sure that'll help things along.  FFS

Anywho.
There are 440 nuclear plants currently running around the world, supplying 10% of the earth's power needs.  All humming along, no problems.  Just churning out power forever.  No big deal.

But we have 2 incidents 45 years apart, full of human error and 1 involving an earthquake/tsunami and BOOO nuclear power!  It's terrible!!!!

People are dumb.

The "will of the people", even if dumb, is a major factor in practicability of a thing.

We're still turning corn into bioethanol to add to gasoline.

this. not to mention the accidents were outdated designs/tech. from what I understand the brand new reactors are much safer with more fail safes designed in. just like pretty much everything, the new ones they build today in 2022 are a lot better than the ones they built back in the day.

I used to live in a state that had a massive nuclear project in a small town.

Turned out they were doing a big old fraud and left the tax payers with the bill. Good times.

There are only two new power reactors being built in the US right now, two, and no more planned with any seriousness.

but I think that is largely due to cost ineffectiveness. we haven't built them in a long awhile.

South Korea made nuclear power a key part of their energy policy, a lot of them, in pairs, and over a 30 year period that country was able to get construction costs to build their reactors to decrease by 50%. They get about a third of their energy needs from nuclear plants. We're at 19% France is at an astonishing world leading 70%.
