Electric vehicles projected to make up 31% of the global fleet by 2050 (electrek.co)

It may be faster than this of course, but it will be a while before significant petroleum reduction for fuel is a thing.

Gotta build nuke plants. It's the only true solution.
But we can't, in the US, or in Germany, and in much of the West.  So, it's not a practicable solution.

Well, this is always the problem. People go on and on about (1) not wanting to be dependent on other countries for our energy needs and (2) always wanting our gas to be really cheap. One way to get less dependent on Saudi Arabia is to stop needing so much gas.
we don't really buy that much oil from Saudi Arabia. It's not that we need their gas.

they just happen to have the 2nd most provable oil reserves in the entire world and also happen to be the worlds low cost high volume producer of oil. they also happen to largely control the OPEC cartel, of which they are the highest producing member and wield most influence, and OPEC produces 40% of worlds entire oil supply and 60% of worlds oil exports. Saudis also helped US retain dominance as worlds reserve currency after the Nixon shock by striking a deal with US to standardize the sale of their oil based in US dollars. Saudis are most definitely complete assholes but they are a vital strategic partner of the US and have been for 70+ years.

And it's just simple supply and demand. Saudis as largest producer in OPEC and most influential member of OPEC can wield massive power in increasing or decreasing the supply of oil. flood market with supply, they can cool prices. restrict supply, they can raise them. OPEC=40% of worlds entire oil and 60% of worlds oil exports. those are huge numbers. they can wield massive power over the price of oil. having them on your side when you need them- like the previous guy- is a necessity.

Bad policy.
Well, sure. But policies change if anyone takes the time to make the case to change them. That no one does is not the same as no one can.

Do you seriously not know why the US and much of the west is not going nuclear?  Really?

Or why Germany is shutting theirs down?

It's nice to think "Well, we could build nukes", but reality, that word again, is that is isn't happening.  It's pretty obvious why it isn't.

This isn't an answer.

absolutely.

federal gov't needs to remove environmental barriers and dump endless amounts of money to subsidize R&D and construction costs of building them. just pour an endless amount of money into it. you know, like they do the military.

Imagine the US work force was paid what the Chinese work force is paid and companies could operate with almost not regulations on emissions, worker safety, HR, unions, etc.  Race to the bottom, it's called.
Race to the bottom overseen by an oppressive oligarchy. Quite a feat.

And if we were to try choking it off, we’d be having the talk we’re having about gas, but about all sorts of goods.
