Pure numbers say little about qualitative advantages of course.

Well I suppose it's a good thing Putin is just concerned over peace-keeping, then. Everything will be fine.

Russian tanks roll past CNN reporter as they appear to head towards Ukraine

Some pretty amazing video, I'm surprised Russia allowed this.

Maybe at best Putin wants to degrade Ukrainian defenses without an actual occupation, while he does occupy some breakaway areas as noted before.  (I don't mean that is good at all, but it could be better than a full occupation effort.)

All our sanctions and harsh language is not going to impact Putin that I can see.

i sincerely hope the sanctions will have serious effects.  I hope that the US, and all other nations of the world, enact them to the fullest extent that we can.

Putin has been building up his reserves in other national currencies and crypto-currencies over the past several years in order to weather the coming storm.  But if the nations of the world can hit the oligarchs hard where it counts, that could fracture the Russian government.  That's probably the world's best and only hope at ending the current Russian aggression.

Oh, I think they will. They will hurt us too. Badly.

It's a necessary step.  We need to extricate ourselves economically from Russia, just as we need to extricate ourselves from China.  Both will be costly but both are critical for our future national security.

Absolutely this. It's gonna be really hard to get away from China though. Their corruption is probably only rivaled by our own corruption.

Sanctions will hurt your average Russian no doubt, but the elite?  Probably not significantly, at least not short term.

We're so intricately linked with China it'll be a mess.  But there are steps we can take to begin the process.

The first step was for American manufacturing companies to see and understand how much of their own economic wellbeing is dependent on a benevolent and fully operational China.  Ironically, the pandemic has actually helped American companies understand just what could happen to them, if China decided they no longer wanted to play ball.  I won't speak in specifics but I'm closely tied to decisions made by large American technology companies and the global risk analyses have begun to focus on this, almost exclusively.  Plans are in motion to change it.

But it takes time.  A lot of time.

Why is the ABM treaty relevant to this?

I thought Putin would play a longer game here, this is so overt it's going to cost him (and us).

Putin's invasion of Ukraine was totally predictable.  His aggression towards Ukraine was never about NATO.  The Biden Administration had over 6 months to plan for this and did little.  The strategy to sanction Russia after the fact is obviously a failure.
underlined - disagree. every action will have a reaction. things do not just happen in a vacuum. withdrawing from ABM treaty in 2002, pushing for Ukraine to join NATO in 2008, and the US backing a coup of a neutral if not Russia friendly democratically elected gov't in Ukraine in 2014 played a part in leading to where we are right now. If ABM treaty is still in place, Ukraine never gets the open ended invite in 2008, and US doesn't help back and engineer that coup in 2014- none of this is likely happening right now.

bolded - kinda hard to put sanctions on Russia just for a military build-up in their own country. sanctions are an act of economic war and can cripple and devastate an entire country and kill thousands. you can't just sanction a country for moving forces within their own territory. they have to give you reason first- and they just gave the US and the world plenty of reason now for hardcore sanctions.

we don't do much trade with Russia as is, should be easy to dump them. definitely agree on China, but man that one is going to be hard- we are so interlinked with them it's crazy
