I thought i read that'Hadrian kept his soldiers busy building that wall across the Scottish/English frontier. So they were occupied and not thinking of a replacement for him
I was replying to a post regarding armed forces in European countries at airports and such, but it got lost somehow

Even if there were zero disputes though, Ukraine still would not be eligible to join NATO. They do not meet the threshold when it comes to corruption. They are a spectacularly corrupt country.

Totally agree with this.  And Putin knows it too.  Which is why it's irrational for Putin to be afraid of it happening.

I think Putin is selfish and greedy and brutal but I don't think he's irrational.

Which means he's not invading Ukraine because he's afraid of it becoming a NATO country, that's nothing more than a pretext.  He's invading simply because he wants the Ukraine.

And if being surrounded by NATO countries is really such a bother to him, then this is the worst move he could make, because this invasion is almost certain to push Finland and Sweden into NATO.  Which is, again, an irrational move, if he actually does care about restricting further NATO expansion along or near his borders.

So I don't think he really gives a rat's ass about NATO's involvement.  He just wants the Ukraine and he believes he can take it without direct military intervention from the West.   I hope he's right about the last part, anyway.

Isn't Biden's son somehow has busness affairs in the Ukraine?
Lol. Yeah, the crack head son was getting paid $83,000 a month starting in 2014 to sit on a company board by Burisma - a Ukrainian energy company - after the overthrow of a democratically elected government by a US backed coup in 2014 - while his father was appointed head of Ukraine policy by Obama.

And in December of 2015, Biden flew to Kiev and strong-armed the new Ukrainian government into firing its top prosecutor, Viktor Shokin, who was investigating Burisma at the time. Shokin had seized four large houses and a Rolls-Royce Phantom belonging to the Burisma's majority owner Mykola Zlochevsky.

Three months later, Shokin was forced out of office, and nine months later, all legal proceedings against Burisma were dropped. Joe Biden has said in the past that Shokin wasn’t doing enough to crack down on corruption and that the push had nothing to do with Hunter’s position. In a 2018 speech at the Council on Foreign Relations, Biden bragged that he had threatened to withhold $1 billion in US loan guarantees for Ukraine unless Shokin was fired. Shokin claims that he was fired specifically because he was investigating Burisma's corruption.

Once Obama/Biden left office and Trump came in - Burisma started cutting crack head sons pay in half- but continued to pay him until 2019- when he resigned from the board after everything came out and it started to damage his fathers presidential campaign.

As I previously suggested Trudeau has chosen to hold onto his emergency powers saying its not over

The streets are clear and most of the protestors have been arrested so basically Canada has become a dictatorship.

Now a lot of folks are thinking that the next election will correct things but I predict that this emergency will be deemed so great that elections will be suspended

It looks to me that either the military will have to step in or the people will have to restore democracy by force

This is one of the main reasons we have a 2nd amendment in this country

whats interesting is the fact that this country's state department has not made a peep about this
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

And in other news...

Job Pishing is officially a thing.

The elaborate con that tricked dozens into working for a fake design agency

Apparently dozens of folks around the world were phished into working for a fake design agency, some went up to 6 months without pay, before the truth came out.

So what was the con?  Identity theft?  Payment not rendered for services performed ?

Yeah payment not rendered.

It's really weird because there's no way to know whether or not the con artist ever made any money off them.  After 6 months of building up clients and bidding out work, as far as he told the workers, they'd still never closed a deal.  It's possible that was true, or it's possible he pocketed whatever money might have been made.

Germany is decommissioning its nuclear plants, which means they will burn more coal and natural gas (from Russia) and buy power from France.  Putin has played this nicely over the years funding the Green Parties in Germany.

Ukraine could shut off shipments of NG through the one pipeline.

I read the US is now shipping more LNG to Europe than they get from Russia, but it's close.  LNG is expensive.

Not only is LNG expensive but Germany lacks access to sufficient LNG import terminals to satisfy much of their incremental demand, should Russia cut off their pipeline supply.

My wife tells me that living in  France is "complicated" in many ways, things like getting a DL or just moving.  I've watched others sell their house, it's a protracted process, not nearly as smooth as it is here.  Getting zoning changed requires grease.  She says living there is very different from spending time as a visitor.

There is some definite appeal to thinking about living in Provence in a small town.  Your house or apartment would be maybe half what you could get here, maybe like living in SF or close pricewise.  Taxes of course bite hard in the middle class.  And government operates to "make work" and put up barriers to things.

Not like here where government is a smoothly running efficient and honest machine.

Just back from Costco ($550) and I bought some branzino, head on, for dinner tonight.  I'm going to try and make a red pepper sauce.  Any ideas on how best to cook the fish?  I'll probably broil, might try the cast iron.
