Nobody with any expertise or authority on the matter would claim vaccines were 100% effective.  They simply weren't.  Maybe some idiots claimed it, so I suppose that counts.

Ukraine is going to need to lay down and accept this as they did Crimea.  They can't attack these areas militarily.  That would bring on the whole weight.  Putin is playing the long game.

I believe what they wanted was for the government to lift the vaccine mandates and the vaccine passports. Passports were always a terrible idea- we don't really have those in the US and I believe if the federal government tried a nationwide passport there would be outright war in the streets- not peaceful protests by truckers like in Canada- which is probably why they never happened here.

As far the vaccine mandates- the science is in. The vaccines will not stop transmission, so to me there is really no point in having a vaccine mandate. In most if not all cases it will provide protection from serious illness/hospitalization/death but it won't prevent transmission or reinfection. Doesn't matter how many vaccines or boosters you get- you will get covid. All of us. If the mandates were about stopping the spread- well they don't stop the spread so I don't see much use for mandates. Get the protection if you want it, don't get it if you don't want it.
Vaccine passports were never happening here.  If individual businesses want to use them, that's their right.  Beyond that, no politician trying to appeal to broad voter base even suggested them as far as I know

From early 2021 I can recall some of the NY state-level politicians discussing the idea of a vaccine passport.  It was obviously never implemented.

so to recap, the Trudeau government is moving to make draconian financial surveillance permanent. The blockades are all over and protests have been squashed - and he's looking to extend the Emergencies Act for 30 days. An act which states;

the emergency must be a "national emergency" which means an "urgent and critical situation of a temporary nature" that either "(a) seriously endangers the lives, health or safety of Canadians and is of such proportions or nature as to exceed the capacity or authority of a province to deal with it, or (b) seriously threatens the ability of the Government of Canada to preserve the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of Canada and that cannot be effectively dealt with under any other law of Canada".

Squashing a peaceful protest doesn't exactly pass the smell test- clearly does not meet that criteria..

Which is probably why the CCLA - their version of the ACLU - is taking the Trudeau government to court.

If Trudeau is literally a dictator, he could of course ignore all of this and do as he wishes.

he is doing what he wishes, and he's certainly doing his best to play dictator. not surprising after all, this is the same douchebag who says the government he most admires in the world is the CCP.

Masks don't generally bother me.  I don't mind not getting the flu.  So I may keep wearing one when I go to the grocery store.  But I'm not judging those who don't either.  The only time I've found it overly restrictive is coaching baseball.  It's hot, and with young kids, they respond to your facial expressions as much as what you actually say.  There were so many times I tried to praise a kid, and I could tell from his face that he thought I was yelling at him.

Like I said, I still wear a mask into grocery stores, but I was the first coach to drop a mask last summer.  When one of the assistants asked me if we didn't have to anymore, I noted the commissioner was unmasked coaching his team on an adjacent field, and I was willing to stand up to any parent who challenged it.

I can just feel the tension between the masked and unmasked in the grocery stores, and I want that to end.  Can't both be ok with their choices?

Grocery stores and big box stores were proven not to be a significant threat vector by the middle of 2020, so I haven't worn a mask in the store since then, aside from ones that post signs requiring it.

I don't care at all what others choose to do in the store, mask or no-mask, makes no difference to me.

yeah, so apparently I am wrong. your post made me look into this further.

Yelp was saying that 60% of restaurants that closed during covid - were gone forever. Turns out that was Yelp projecting that and not actual data.

I stand corrected, as The Real Deal (a great website btw) reported last year the actual number was 14% per the National Restaurant Association. https://therealdeal.com/2021/05/19/only-14-of-restaurants-closed-permanently-because-of-pandemic/

Another reason not to use Yelp. Lol.
Thanks.

I'm not going to quibble with the 14% number. Seems a little high but within the realm of plausible. 60%, however,  has been setting off my BS detector for weeks but I hadn't gotten around to asking.

Sure. Move to Florida. Lots of folks still mask here, and nobody judges. It's a free state.

I think everyone should move to Texas. Austin specifically. :)
