I prefer reading personally if a person has a point to make.  I have never listened to any of these podcast things, probably a reflection of my ancienity.
they are a great way to kill time, open your mind, look at things from different viewpoints and to learn something while you're doing something. if you drive a lot or work at a desk a lot - great thing to have playing in the background. beats the hell out of a lot of other crap you could have on.

This isn't news, but whatever.

So for the last few weeks, I've been going to the Y to use the pool because I need to mix in some low-impact cardio. Just before the locker room exit to the pool, you have a row of showers, which are there to wash off chlorine as you come out, or sweat/grime off if you're going in. This is fine.

But I do not and never will understand why a subset of people insist on using this as a main shower. This gym has showers. The private kind. And if you want an open shower, hell, there might be one that isn't also a hallway to the damn pool. These people finish up in the hot tub or sauna or whatever, and then go to those showers. On purpose.

This means a gauntlet of buck-ass nekkid people as I go to and from the pool. I'm catching splash off as I walk through. Some of these folks are just going to town with the soap. Who are these degenerates and why?

They're perfect if you drive a lot.  There are literally millions of them  on every topic you can think of.  You could try a woodworking one or an author's channel.
Hell, there's probably a podcast about downtown Atlanta construction....and if there's not, you could start one.

I enjoy the quiet, not something in the background.  My wife plays classical music all the time, but she just got hearing aids and plays it through them now.

I find music or someone talking to be distracting if I'm trying to focus on something, like getting my taxes in order, as I'm doing now.

Musical acts make $1 million+ per concert (if they're doing arenas), so they're not in the poor house.
I know what you're saying, but one thing really doesn't have to do with the other. What artists make at concerts really isn't related to them not being compensated fairly or properly by Spotify. And most artists on Spotify don't make that kind of money performing at concerts, nor will they ever. Spotify is a great thing for consumers - they have access to hundreds of millions of songs at their fingertips, but the artists are definitely taking a bit of a shafting when it comes to royalty payments.

Rogan has $100 million, so there's no need for him to do anything different.  His ascension has been interesting.  He's sort of done the McDonalds thing of being consistent.  Not amazing, not perfect.  Just consistent - grinding it out.  He's been podcasting for 20+ years.  And despite being gullible for conspiracy theories (even the really dumb ones), the one biggest thing he's had going for him was his lack of an ego.  He's said countless times that he's an idiot, that he's an expert on nothing, and that no one should base their political decisions on what he says.
Rogan's deal with Spotify was worth $100 million over 3 years I believe, and it was a terrific deal for him because it's straight licensing. Spotify doesn't own any part of his show or company, and when the deal is up he's free to up and take all his episodes anywhere. Great deal for both of them. Really. Rogan got a fat pay-check and Spotify got to claim the podcast throne from Apple off Rogan's back.

I think his biggest draw is his open-mind and his humility. He comes across as a very humble, like-able guy. He comes across as a very genuine, kind person. There is no bullshit or pretension to anything about him. He hasn't "sold out" or become some hack rooting for one team or out-come no matter what. He's not rooting for one team over the other team. One thing I like about him is that he rants against tribalism constantly. He's pretty much the same guy now that he was when he started his podcast out of his garage in 2009 when no one was listening or watching.

He has had experts in an incredible number of different fields on, talking for 2-3 hours, while asking questions and for clarifications just as any layperson would.  THAT is what's drawn people in.  He's not always up against a commercial break or arbitrarily ending the show at a set number of minutes, and it's allowed for conversations to occur that you can't find anywhere else.  Not because he's particularly deep or knowledgeable, but because he's never been beholden to anyone.  He ends the podcast when everything's been fleshed out, not because a focus group says an ideal podcast length is 92 minutes.

I can't tell you how many times I've been enjoying one of my other podcasts and they "need" to wrap it up.....because.....reasons?  Because if you spoke about philosophy or college football or religion for 7 more minutes, the world would explode?  All your listeners would complain?  What?  It's stupid.

Joe Rogan isn't great at anything except not being a slave to the clock.  The mainstream everything can't handle that.
I agree with pretty much all of this, except the end. I think Joe Rogan is great at connecting with other people. He's just a humble, genuine, down to earth regular guy. And I think that's one of the things that has made him so big right now. People appreciate sincerity, authenticity, and honesty. Especially when they get it almost nowhere else.

I tried listening to the Ted Talks when they were a thing.  I think it reminds me too much of "work" when I had to sit and listen to some exec yammer on about nonsense.

Everyone is different.

There are several good web sites about ATL construction stuff that I glance over when I'm amind to and bored.

My wife thinks I'm a bit odd.  She listens to these pod casts called Odino, her daughter works for it, and I suspect he's pretty interesting really, but it's all in French.  Might as well be in Greek.  I attended one of their concerts in Paris, it was well done actually.

Maybe if you could hit a slider high and inside she'd think more of you

Back in the day, I went to a work dinner with some folks in the division, I wasn't interested but I was new to the division and went and sat at a table by myself.  Another fellow joined me, I knew him from a while back, and the other tables filled up 8 seats to a table, fine with me.  Well, the VP (who was horrible) was glad handing all around saying hello and what not, and when she came to sit down, the only table with open chairs left was mine, so she sat with the two of us, and suddenly there was a rush of sychophantic others to move to the 5 chairs remaining at our table.

I managed not to say anything.

Years later I went to another meeting, not dinner, and sat again by myself at a table in the back and the VP (different guy) walked by early and said "Dyer, could you get any further from the podium?" and laughed and left, and came back later to give his speech.  Meanwhile,  the head technologist was also strolling about and happened to sit at my table as well (our offices were next to each other, I knew him well, decent enough fellow), and suddenly there was a such, same as above, to occupy the remaining seats.

Not everyone at work was like this, but plenty were.  Face time with the higher ups was highly prized.

this is hilarious. having said that, I hate Starbucks, always have, this is nothing new as their entire business model from day one was to price gouge the sh*t out of their customers. their margins have to be stupid high- they are like the Apple of coffee. both these companies mottos have to be: "hey, how can we rape our customers more" - but alas....like a complete dumbass I still find myself going to Starbucks and also buying Apple products. There just isn't any competition for Starbucks- they have a monopoly and can charge whatever the f**k they want. sure, in your own town or area you might know some great little coffee spots or cafes - but if you travel a lot or drive a lot - where you going to go? Dunkin Donuts is trash. I wish illy's had cafe's all over the US - I'd go there over Starbucks 10/10 when I want espresso & a croissant in a pinch.

Earnings season has claimed yet another victim. Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) released its earnings report this week, with mixed results. Just as for many labor and asset heavy entities, the global specialty coffee chain had its strong domestic sales overshadowed by the elevated commodity costs and staffing shortages caused by the Omicron variant of COVID-19.
Following the report, analysts themselves remain mixed on Starbuck’s outlook. One of the more neutral voices on the stock is Christopher O’Cull of Stifel Nicolaus, who wrote that the persisting input cost headwinds, Chinese COVID-19 policies, and uncertain margin performance are holding back SBUX’s potential for upside.
The analyst rated Starbucks a Hold, and assigned a price target of $112. This target suggests a possible 12-month upside of 14.60%.
In its earnings call, Starbucks reported earnings per share (EPS) below Wall Street consensus estimates. However, the company did manage to see record demand for its food segment, and strong growth regarding its loyalty program memberships.
In addition to supply side constraints, which raised commodity prices, O’Cull added that “higher than anticipated training and onboarding costs for new partners” have weighed on Starbucks. The difficult labor market is rearing its ugly head considerably as SBUX “continues to compete for talent.” Additionally, quarantine and other disruptions from the widespread Omicron variant have impacted Starbuck’s balance sheet.

Their earnings per share over recent quarters.

I dislike their coffee and we have plenty of alternatives near us.  They do seem pretty busy when we walk by though.

Some might be interested to know that for profit companies are in business for profit, maximizing same.  It's a near concept.
