The "cure" on misinformation could be worse than the disease.  I don't even know what a cure could comprise, but I do think some are able to purvey misinformation which is quite harmful to the public interest.
The best way to "cure misinformation" is to have an open and honest public debate on the topics in question. Allow people to see both sides of an issue and make their own decisions. More speech is better than censored speech.

Well, in theory, but my premise relates to a highly technical issue which is going to harm society seriously if not addressed.

Prediction: The next person to be banned from Twitter for spreading misinformation will not be from the left.

nor will it be the corporate/establishment/mainstream media. they take down or censor independent news outlets constantly for "misinformation" - yet the establishment media spews misinformation constantly and nothing happens to them. They just continue on like it didn't happen. It is literally nuts. That's why when Trump was calling them the enemy of the people or fake news - it landed. Because unfortunately, they are fake news.

Take this insane video for example. This idiot straight out lies and the tv "journalists" aka tv actors never pushback or question him and they actually help him push the out and out lies. The major and astounding lies not based in any reality whatsoever. (a) this idiot says that 146,000 children have died from covid since the start of the pandemic in 2020. WTF. The actual number is around 700 to 800- vast majority of which were children that were obese, had diabetes, cancer, or other diseases. how in the actual f**k is he able to get away with saying these lies. this is preposterous. (b) covid is one of the top 10 causes of death for children. again...NOT TRUE. By any means. how in the mother F is he able to get away with spreading this misinformation? (c) vaccine gives stronger protection from covid than natural immunity. WTF? hundreds of studies have literally proven without a shadow of a doubt that is just not true. natural immunity provides stronger and longer lasting protection from infection.

This video hasn't been censored for misinformation, hasn't been taken down. The video was ratioed to hell - meaning it had tens of thousands of dislikes and maybe only 500 likes - and videos from the "establishment" have been getting ratioed and disliked to death because people aren't stupid and know these establishment corporate outlets are completely full of shit - which is the reason why Google's bitch ass decided to remove the dislike button.

well, it's a dumb premise. the issue of free speech is pretty cut and dry. there are very few and very narrow instances where it can be restricted or punished. this ain't one of 'em.

So, in a hypothetical consider some highly technical issue, "X", where the actions needed are indeed critical to the well being of Society, but there are folks disparaging and minimizing it to the point many believe them, and that prevents "society" from taking needed steps to combat "X".  I think in reality it means little would get done, sort of like what is in "Don't Look Up", a lot of pandering and pretending and silliness to gain political favor.
great point....and take the star of Don't Look Up for example - Leonardo DiCaprio. He drones on about climate change, yet he jet sets all across the world on private jets and travels and parties all over the world on mega yachts full of super models. There was even an instance where he flew 8,000+ miles on a private jet to collect an environmental award. LOL. There was a study that showed that just 1% of people (private jet setters) account for over 50% of all global aircraft emissions.

He's full of shit and just pandering. IF he really cared about climate change he wouldn't be jet setting on private planes and partying on mega yachts with super models all over the god damn world.

Like when all the super rich jerkoffs fly to Davos every year to get together at the World Economic Forum to talk about climate change and saving the planet - and they all fly in on 1,600+ private jets. LOL.

That's a tough one. You really have to pick and choose what you believe, and also do a lot of your own research.

Lots of really good independent journalists. Now more than ever, and thank god for the internet and the democratization of information.

Matt Taibbi, Matt Stoller, Glenn Greenwald, Michael Tracey are some very good independent journalists. Ryan Grimm another pretty good journalist even though he's not independent and with The Intercept and that place has jumped the shark- but - that's to be expected when you hire a bunch of former NYT assholes to run the paper.

Patreon & YouTube actually have some great news shows - Breaking Points with Krystal & Saagar is great, Rising on TheHill's YouTube channel is pretty good.

because the idea that the government should in anyway have a "ministry of truth" and get to censor views or speech counter to their official narrative is batshit crazy.

you cannot give a government more power. they always abuse said power and once they have it they try to expand it and they never give up said power.

I think most folks get their "news" from sources that confirm what they want to believe.  Few are willing to really challenge their beliefs.

I find the various business news channels to be more even handed and they rarely cover what some personality said about whatever (outside the business world).  I lean to thinking investors want something close to reality because it's money to them.  Of course "more even handed" is a low bar.

I think you utterly and totally missed the point I was attempting to make.

this is very true. lean democrat...they watch MSNBC or CNN. lean republican....they watch Fox News.

CNN used to try to attempt to be the middle ground. since Trump came along and broke everyones brains they hopped on the MSNBC bandwagon and it was great for ratings. When Trump was around. Now that he's gone and they've lost a ton of credibility - their ratings are in the toilet.
