Regarding work/labor force  might we also be experiencing high worker displacement based on industry as a result of the pandemic.   Food/service industries are very well known to be suffering and in part some of those prior workers have fled those industries for WFH, and other opportunities in less volatile industries and will never return to them.

A contributory issue I'm suggesting.

I liken it to people who live by an airport and bitch about noise, like it wasn't there when they moved in. F 'em.
Yeah, takeoff from John Wayne Airport here in Orange County is a trip... Rip it up the runway at max power, take the plan near vertical until you hit 800 feet, then level off and shut the engines to minimum to SLOWLY climb your way out until you clear Newport Beach, at which time you can return to applying throttle.

Can't piss off the rich folks in Newport...

The other one that gets me is Salinas, CA, home of Laguna Seca Raceway. One of the iconic tracks of motorsports, it's nestled in what used to be farm country [I think]. Now rich people built houses, and they don't like all the noise from the racetrack, so outside of major sanctioned races a few times a year, they have noise restrictions. All the normal track day events are heavily monitored. Motorcycles with modified exhaust usually have to go partial-throttle at the crest of the front straight to ensure they don't get black flagged. I've even heard of guys who keep their stock exhaust and will swap it back onto the bike for track days at Laguna.

What, you didn't know there was a racetrack there when you moved in?

Finally home, long A drive for me.  We stayed two nights in Clearwater Beach, not a bad place, but kinda boring really.

Rain set in so we left today, a day early.  I'm still sore.

Sure, and I allowed for it.

But it's not 100% of the people that formerly occupied those positions, that somehow-- miraculously-- found WFH opportunities with substantial compensation.  Some industries with WFH opportunities have grown, but there haven't been any significant NEW industries created, to employ the millions that have left service industries since March 2020.

Gas ranged from $3.35 regular in Florida to $2.95, the lowest I saw it near Macon, not Costco.  We didn't grocery shop but we shopped quite a bit, muffling around.

Most chain restaurants are mediocre.

That is true.

What is also true is that independent restaurants are also mediocre. Because most people have terrible taste, so it doesn't take much to cater to that audience. (Which is also why most chain restaurants are mediocre, but at the same time successful.)

the benefit of a chain rest is that generally the food is the same in all of its locations so you know what youll get

it may not be the best but at least it has minimal standards that you will rely on

Yeah, I've tried plenty of mediocre-to-downright-disgusting locally owned mom and pop type restaurants.  Just because it's not a chain, doesn't make it good.

Making high quality food takes time, effort, skill, and the ingredients often cost more.  Since the average person doesn't care to seek out or pay for high quality food, there's no reason for the average restaurant-- chain or locally owned-- to serve anything better.

Funny, the place I'm currently living is on the exit for Phoenix Raceway (NASCAR).  I had no idea.  I'd been to the drag racing and assumed it was on that piece of land just south of town.
It's weird, you exit, take a non-descript main road south, through a few stop signs, and the road dead-ends at a mountain, and there's the raceway!!

Be interested if anybody has moved into the Speedway neighborhood  of Indy not knowing there's a 2 1/2 mile oval smack in the middle.

I grew up about 1.5 miles from a 1/4 clay oval.  Saturday night racing was audible but only loud w the Outlaws and sprint cars.  Kind of thought it was cool.

Yup, it's consistently mediocre, mostly, and when traveling as we were, that can be OK.  Dang long drive at my age.

The bitches can go F themselves.

I liken it to people who live by an airport and bitch about noise, like it wasn't there when they moved in. F 'em.
Or Rail Roads,a Friend of mine and his wife (both teachers) bought a good sized 4 bdrm Colonial with complete basement in suburbia little over 20yrs back. His move coincided with the FAA rerouting flight paths for whatever reason into the Airport in Cleveland. It was unbelievable, the federal government were paying homeowners for the inconvenienance, get this - new windows and doors all around, insulation.Like that wasn't a winfall in and of itself, they F****** paid for new Furnace/A.C units also. I get the windows/doors/insulation but with all that the equipment would work less. He's a great guy and all then his dad knew one of the local merchants who was big in close out market. He ended up getting his whole house carpeted for 800.00 bucks-which was a steal. In 5 yrs he made $50,000 when he moved to a new home(which was fantastic at that time). His dad was right - you couldn't do that in the market. And i was like
