I had good KC bbq, but it was at an upscale place. 

The famous gas station stuff was fine. I wasn’t mad I had it, but I wouldn’t talk about it.

There was a funny colloquial expression there that I have never heard a variation of anywhere else. If you had some crappy toy or whatever, then the other kids would say "that's a piece of junk from the Kansas City dump!"

I've been to every US city of any size but only stayed in the outskirts of KC and don't know it at all.

I skirted Providence also, so maybe I've not been to it really.

yup,  wish my brother wasn't in the Dallas/Ft Worth metro.  Austin/Round Rock was bad enough

I do want to take the daughters to San Fran, but only a day or maybe two in the actual city.

North up the coast and down toward Santa Cruz are quite nice. 

The city is an odd beast. Wish I had better pointers, but I tend to experience it walking and shy from tourist spots, though some are quite cool.
