… I was born and raised there? And my childhood home is there. And a large network of friends and family live there.

And some light fantasizing about them having their citizenship stripped and being left to cartel violence, whatever, what’s a little sass among friends? But eventually if you hammer it and hammer it, yeah, that’s provoking. And eventually, someone will answer prolonged ugliness with ugliness. And considering we’re talking about states, well, you pick up the theme that’s there.

I’ll put it this way, if my desire for civility was just a facade, I would’ve said that with a lot less trolling required. But I admit, I got trolled, and the desired result was achieved.

Okay, I was born in Virginia Beach, and I've never called someone a pedophile for talking smack about Virginia. I talk smack about it too, it's pathetic that they didn't hold their governor accountable for wearing blackface and klan robes, while they virtue signal about racism out of the other corner of their mouth. 
I was raised in Vermont, another fruit loop state. Spent my teens, twenties and thirties in Ohio, a state I've been railing on for the past several pages. Now I live in Utah, which is easy to make fun of. I also spent a year in Missouri, which is even easier to make fun of. 

I guess that I am just made of sterner stuff than you.

oh, I understand I've never walked a mile in their moccasins.  Perhaps I'd never make it out with my family.  I certainly don't want to be put in that position to see what happens.

but, there are plenty of stories about folks that have the will and then find a way to get out and do better for themselves.  Heck, not just ugly inner cities here in the US.

Refugees from war torn countries all over the globe have somehow been pressed to find a way to get out of bad situations.

I just don't buy the excuse, They can't.

I agree that "they can't" isn't true for nearly any. But I think sometimes we overestimate how hard it is. 

I played golf with a coworker yesterday morning. He escaped war-torn El Salvador in his late teens to come to the US. He settled in South Central LA, with all the things that South Central LA has. I.e. he heard gunfire at night but didn't care, because they were plinking guns, not the 50 cal automatic weapons that the military in El Salvador had. He'd hear the police choppers going over at night but it was nothing compared to the big Sikorsky choppers going over at home.

Inspiring story, to not only escape his country but then to be an immigrant in a place none of us would willingly live in LA, get an education, and end up an engineer working for a large multinational tech company. 

But he's a deep outlier, not the norm.

Also a lot of rat tail hair cuts; where having a Mullet just isn't quite redneck enough.

They are the only Midwestern state with ties to the Confederacy, their two major cities are practically in other states, there are countless things to make fun of Missouri for. The Show Me state? I mean, come on.
