As I have already had Covid and recovered, I already have the antibodies that the vaccine proclaims to induce. Therefore, there is no need for me to get the vaccine. There are millions more like me that would NOT benefit from the vaccine.
I think the medical info coming out says you’d likely benefit, though somewhat mildly.

Now, there’s not much evidence/logic it would hurt, but getting it is so intertwined with other stuff at this point, it kind of is what it is.

From what I have read, the vaccine targets a specific spike protein of the original Covid virus but seems to not recognize the spike proteins of the variants. This is why we are seeing so many break through infections of the vaccinated. Also, the antibodies produced are not long lasting, from some reports as little as 2 months. Therefore a booster is required to maintain immunity.

Contrarily, natural immunity appears to be resilient against the virus and all of it's variants. Also, natural immunity causes B-Cell and T-Cell immunity that will trigger the body to produce antibodies long after the current antibodies in the system are gone.

I think my wife and I are pretty well set to survive Covid in the long term.

So it is Columbus Day for regular Americans, Indigenous Peoples Day for woke White Americans, Thanksgiving for Canadians, and if that wasn't enough, Twitter says that woke White Americans also get to celebrate this today:

I'm all for more holidays, but why do they all have to be on the same day? There are 365.25 days per year, folks. Use them.

So many interesting assumptions and narratives.

Guy that works for me ( early 50s) contracted covid this past weekend.

1. Shows up in Florida data, but clearly contracted it in another state.
Went with wife to visit out of state daughter in large metro area.  Both fully vaccinated.  Went to a NHL game where proof of vax was required.  Both flights packed

Both ran fever and other symptoms pretty strong when they returned.  Went to CVS for the test.  While waiting for the results- both went to Regeneron clinic nearby.  Got the shot and within hours- felt better, lost most if not all symptoms. Both tests came back positive.

2. What does any of this have to do with politics or policy?  Nothing.  Guy did everything right.  In fact the only possible exception is when he emailed me he said “I am thankful that the governor opened all of those Regeneron clinics to make this much more palatable because until I had that shot I felt like shit”
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

I question the use of the words so many

Data supports the number of breakthrough cases being around .5% of those vaccinated and of those only about .9% have required hospitalization and less then 1% have died

in short the vaccine is effective against the new strains at a small decrease in overall protection
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

Yeah, that's not really accurate.

  • The vaccine protects against all current variants. Delta is much more transmissible, which is why you're seeing breakthrough infections, not because the vaccine doesn't respond to Delta.
  • Typical antibody persistence seems to be somewhere in the 6+ month range for the vaccine. It definitely wanes, but not typically in the 2 month window.
  • B- and T-cell immunity memory doesn't mean your body will keep producing antibodies long-term. Even in the case of natural infection, your antibodies will wane over time.
  • The vaccine has been shown to produce B- and T-cell immunity memory as well. It is not different from natural infection in that case.
  • Where B- and T-cell immunity comes into play is not in preventing infection, but in preventing serious illness. There is data that natural infection confers stronger immunity from future infection than the vaccine, as the vaccine wanes. However the vaccine has still been shown to be >90% effective at preventing hospitalization at that 6 month timeframe, which is important.

There is also strong evidence that the immunity conferred by natural infection PLUS the vaccine (and maybe only one shot, not requiring too) is better than either natural infection or the vaccine individually. So there is benefit to anyone who has the natural infection from getting the shot. How much that matters for a young and otherwise healthy individual? I don't have a quantification for that.

Interestingly, the holiday came into wide scale celebration as a means to placate the Italian community after a lynching of Italian immigrants in 1892.

Back then, making it a holiday was probably a proto-woke act. (Also kind of a silly holiday, but I’ll take the off day)

Hispanic folk are pretty defensive of Columbus.

Seems like he would be the poster boy for for the woke White Left. Came to America uninvited from a Spanish speaking country, educated by Islamic Universities, and elevated above the White guy that actually discovered America in Erik the Red.

Their Columbus rage is actually pretty comical, when you think about it.

Wait, it’s today?

Well, then it really doesn’t matter to me.

At Purdue we had what was called OctoberBreak, which was a Mon/Tues in October that offset the week in November for Thanksgiving, when students had Wed/Thu/Fri off.

It didn't particularly coordinate with Columbus Day.

My fraternity used to use that 4-day weekend to organize a houseboat trip down at Lake Cumberland in Kentucky. 25-35 guys and some of their girlfriends, split up across 2-3 boats typically, and enough alcohol to kill the state of Utah. Those were fun trips--what I remember of them anyway!
