I'd need to see an example of how a billionaire pays under 1% on INCOME tax.  And increasing their tax rate would obviously not change how they manage the tax system, this is a fairly common misconception.  The marginal top income tax rates obviously is well over "under 1%", that simply is not the issue, at all.

Right, so I'm advocating for changing the system.  Thanks for spelling it out.

If the top 10% are paying in 70% of the tax revenue I dont have a problem with selected taxpayers paying only 1% of their income in tax as long as they followed the law

Now Mr smarty what is your suggestion to get these extra taxes you say exist

do you want to change the tx laws do you want a general tax on wealth

do you want to change to a flat tax system

just what are you suggesting we do
Same as the legal system - I'd like a person's wealth to be irrelevant when it comes to how sneaky they can be with taxes or their alleged innocence.  Our broken systems favor the ultra-wealthy and it costs us - all of us.
Maybe I'm not bothered by high-end lawyers and accountants having a more basic life.

OK, how?  You said raising their income tax rates, which would do nothing.

A wealth tax may be unconstitutional, in addition to having unintended consequences.

I think folks conflate WEALTH with INCOME.  We tax the latter.  A billionaire can easily, and legally, have zero income.

I'll never understand why the non-1%ers defend the 1%ers so vigorously.
Cincy, you know how you and I pay income tax?  We make X-amount of money in a fiscal year and then pay taxes on it?  That's what they should do, too.  The system's loopholes and exceptions should be eliminated and it's  simple "you made this much, so you pay this amount in taxes" just like you and me.

Fancy accountants should be compensated not for their ability to avoid taxes, but for their otherwise depth and breadth of knowledge about accounting.

I don't care how they made their money, it's income if it's new to you, and so they pay taxes on it.  And if that's not good enough for you, then I don't know enough about it, but I know that the current system (like nearly all of our systems) is broken and needs a paradigm shift.

I'm not defending anyone, I''m trying with no success to explain to you why a billionaire has no need to pay INCOME tax if he has no INCOME.

It's a simple concept.  And there might be no way to fix that obvious fact.  It doesn't take loopholes and accountants.  That is NOT the point.

the point with billionaires "income" is when they have 1 billion last year, but this year they have 2 billion.  They could pay taxes on the added billion.  Capital gains, interest income, whatever

this started with Mdot pointing out that the billionaire's wealth grew substantially over the previous year.  Did they pay taxes on this "income"

I'd guess they did not.

same old dogma with zero ideas
youre reading from a script the left has used for years

Im going to ask you one more time

what ideas do you have on how to achieve your goal

the wealthy go to jail just like you and me if they violate the tax law

so what should be done to fix the system you say is broken

our tax rates increase with the amount of taxable income a tax payer has so what else do you want done

dont tell us what you want the end result to be instead tell us how to get there

They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

This again is part of my point which folks consistently miss.  An increase in WEALTH is not necessarily INCOME, it simply isn't, and often is not at this level.

Imagine a billionaire who has $1 billion IN STOCK in some company, say FB, and the price of said stock DOUBLES in a year.  He's now worth $2 billion, just on that asset alone, and PAYS NO INCOME TAXES ON IT (unless he sells it, then he pays capital gains taxes if he held the asset a year or more).

INCOME is NOT WEALTH!

We tax INCOME.

One thing billionaires rarely do is sell assets.  You only have INCOME when you sell (or get dividends).  Your wealthy goes up, you hope, but you have no income as a result of that.  None, zero, no fancy accountants needed.

We tax income.

The truly wealthy simply do not need taxable income.

I agree, but.......... the billionaire has to cash some stock to pay for his lifestyle.

meals, travel, maid service, chauffeur, ect.  Just like you and me.

so, he should be showing more income than you and me combined, because he's spending more to live than we are.

as I stated, capital gains tax
