My definition of wealthy is having enough money to need no income.  As we tax income (except at death), that means a wealthy person can easily avoid taxes.

And if they want some income, they can buy municipal bonds, and as noted, never sell any assets.  I don't know the interest rate they would pay on say stocks, right now leveraging stocks does have a low rate for everyone.  And they can also donate appreciated assets, I've done that myself, to offset some taxable income.

They will pay property taxes and sales taxes of course.
Wealth should be taxed before income. We have it all backwards here. I will always be against working class people who break their backs being taxed at higher percentages of their income (which is all the wealth they have for many) than the ultra wealthy.

This country had no income tax for most of its history. Very rarely were income taxes issued and they were all temporary measures which expired. Not until what? 1913 with the formation of the federal reserve and the ratification of the 16th amendment.

They don’t show income because they don’t want to pay tax. And they are gaming the banking system to avoid paying tax. And the banks- which the US taxpayer has bailed out again and again- is complicit in these schemes and scams.

They will pay property tax and sales tax- because they have to pay those. There is no way for them to game the system and avoid it- and those are local & state level taxes- not federal taxes- so they are really a moot point in regards to this discussion.

As a youngster, I read Tom Wolfe's account of Ken Kesey and his Merry Tricksters "The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test".  I admired the idealism attributed to the hippies but the illusion faded pretty quickly as I met many of them.
The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test and The Pump House Gang were the books to carry around my high school for those who held up Ho and Che as their exemplars.  I don't know if they actually read them, but those were two of the books they carried.
The Books They Carried.  Could be a reflection on my HS graduating class.

I try to avoid it whenever possible

It gives me silly ideas like theres only so much wealth available to man and the rich people are hoarding it

Billionaires don't need to give to charities, simply just pay their fair share in taxes.  But being a philathropist is cheaper and it's good publicity.

I wouldn't mind if they didn't donate a dime to charity, it's their money.  I just want the money owed to us.

I'd rather have anyone (billionaire or poor folks like us) give of their free will, than be forced to give up $$$.

What is their "fair share"?

You do realize that they are paying their taxes according to the tax laws as written.

I will disagree with this idea. Taxing wealth is essentially confiscation of wealth.

I would propose that the income tax is eliminated and we implement a user or sales tax. While the ultra rich can essentially hide their income, it is pretty easy and straight forward to tax purchases. And being as they most likely purchase bigger and more expensive items, they would be paying the larger share of the tax.

Also, taxing income discourages the accumulation of wealth. What's the old saying, if you want less of something, tax it? Remove the income tax and allow people to make as much as they want, tax free. Only tax them on what they spend.

This would have another major benefit. We could all but eliminate the IRS. The need for all of the IRS agents would not exist. The only people collecting taxes would be those that sold a good or service. The tax would be how much did you sell? Multiply that by whatever percent that you collect from the buyer and send it to the government. (I know it would be more complicated than that, but you get the idea.)

How about the same as us or a little more?  Let's start there.  It's not hard.

The top 10% of income earners pay over 70% of the income taxes

just how much do you want them to pay

Tire and suspension companies would love this plan.  Roads are dumb.

I want the ones who pay very little to pay an average amount.  Stop going off on tangents.
