Maybe not in Seattle, but off the Washington coast? Yup.

I showed this to the wife as a reason why my arm blew out when I was 16 throwing the first game of the season in March.

That isn't me of course.

Seattle is also heavily constrained by geography. The area on which to build is only about 20 miles wide at it's furthest, between Puget Sound and mountains, mostly public owned.
Yep, much like San Francisco and the general peninsula as well. San Francisco is obviously bounded on three sides by water. To the south, from San Francisco down to San Jose, there's a narrow strip of land running down the peninsula between the bay and the Santa Cruz mountains, and no room to build.

The Curios I've stayed in were quite nice, especially in Paris.  The main Hilton in Paris (Opera) is so so IMHO.  The old Hilton on Courcelles was excellent but they sold it.

The Hiltons in Europe are better than the ones here without exception in my view, in part because they serve alcohol in the exec lounge.  Free.

We stayed at the waldorf in Versailles, I had a deal, twice now, it is really something.
You Can Now Stay Overnight at the Palace of Versailles.

Opened June 1, the Airelles Château de Versailles, Le Grand Contrôle occupies three historic buildings on the renowned estate best known as the royal residence from which King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette were removed in 1789, during the French Revolution.

One reason Atlanta spread out is no georgraphic barriers, Dallas is the same.  Folks could get their starter castle on an acre wooded lot pretty cheap out in Dacula.  We drove to DC and saw new subdivisions on the side of the freeway 50 miles from our condo.

Phoenix is and will grow almost like a staircase.  Due to mountains, but mostly reservations, this swath of land can/will be developed, but not the ones to the east or south of it.  Or west and north of it.  From Anthem in the north, you go south 30 miles, then 20 miles to the east, and then 10 miles south again.
The west side has some more room to grow, but it's all poor people and the retiree mecca of Sun City.

People should not "fill in the blank", but they do.

The wife mused about retiring in LV, to the point I checked our real estate in our price range.  It was attractive in one sense.

Should people live in what formerly were swampy areas filled in to make space?  How about on top of rubble pushed off to extend shore lines in San Francisco in an earthquake zone?  Should anyone live in an earthquake zone?  Should folks move to Austin, TX?

How about crammed on a narrow island in NYC?

Or in massive cities in Africa and China and India?

Or below dams?

How big of one are we talking?

It might be that I'm a good sleeper, and thus slept through many small quakes, but in the grand scheme of regional natural disasters, the quake worries always seemed overblown.
