In politics, it's a lot more sexy to get credit for spending $500M building something new [especially if you get your name on it] than to spend $500M making sure something someone 30 years ago built doesn't fall down. It's hard to point your constituents to "ongoing maintenance" to justify what a good job you're doing for them.

It's funny when you're growing up and discover how flexible bridges, skyscrapers, plane wings, etc are and have to be.  If they weren't, they'd fail in days, not decades.
If you ever find yourself in Taipei, make sure to visit the observation deck of Taipei 101...

They use a "tuned mass damper" to reduce sway of the building during typhoons and earthquakes. What's a tuned mass damper, you ask?

Well, it's a gigantic steel ball suspended by steel cables on top of pistons... https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/tuned-mass-damper-of-taipei-101 https://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/design/a16819/tapei-101-mass-damper-record/

And by "gigantic" I mean 800 tons

Here's it swaying during a typhoon...

Pictures, videos, and even saying the words "800 tons" etc don't do it justice... Actually seeing that thing really gives you a much better sense of just what sort of scale I'm talking about.

Plus Taipei is cool as hell. I highly recommend visiting ;-)

I've used Taipei 101 as an example of a tuned mass damper for several of my STEM outreach presentations.

I thought Taipei 101 was a little league team...

I still remember one night I was in Taipei on a business trip and went to a brewpub...

  • Thai food
  • German-style beer
  • American pop music on the radio
  • The totally hilarious Taiwan "Super Basketball League" on the TVs above the bar

Talk about a cultural mishmash lol...

Kind of like  big Jock strap when you really think of it.
Saw video's of it a while back,Wonder when those cables that suspend that ball are inspected. And I'm sure they factored in replacing  them when the time comes - that would be trick

There's a "your mama" joke somewhere in there.

All we need is an infrastructure bill, that actually contains money for infrastructure.
yeah no shit. we don't make or build anything here anymore and have crumbling infrastructure. meanwhile China builds skycrappers, roads, bridges, and dams in what seems like weeks.

I've visited uncrowded beaches in Florida, they are there, but kids prefer the other kind.

We visited Miami Beach and it was pretty quiet when we were there.  We stayed across the street from a sliver of a park and then beach.

The wife tripped on a sidewalk and burst an artery in her forehead, and also ruined her shoulder at the same time.  Had an interesting ride in the ambulance, they took good care of her.  She was really  bleeding.

She had the shoulder done last August, the full monte, unlike mine.  She said it was really bad, the recovery.  rotator cuff.
I like the uncrowded, secluded beaches if they are kept up well. Problem is, I've found that most beaches in small podunk butt fk egypt towns in North Florida/West Florida have disgusting beaches that have tons of seaweed and stink like rotten dead fish.

The beaches in South Florida are super nice because those counties/cities spend a shit ton of money maintaining and improving them. Plus the scenery (women) is wayyyyyy better. Like 1,000,000x better. At least.

The population explosion in Florida over the last 50-75 years just astounds me.
It's insane. Just look at the last 20 years. When I moved to FL there was around 16 million people. It overtook NY to become the third most populated state in the union, and it's pushing on 23 million now and it's growing even faster than before because of the pandemic.

This drives me nuts - I voted against every fookin' sintax they drag out for NBA/NFL/MLB/NHL play grounds. And this is why, finances that prudently be allocated to the greater good.Intead of already obscenely rich team owners and millionaire Athletes .When it shakes out economists have stated communities could have redirected funds instead of the comparitively little that comes in that doesn't compensate for the over all costs.I honestly believe the votes were rigged.I don't know anyone who has stated they like to pay about 1.50 at least more for a case of beer for contests they can hardly afford to attend.Communities should put a vote up to revoke such assinine expenditures
