All we need is an infrastructure bill, that actually contains money for infrastructure.
pork and redistribution grease the skids for everyone

It would be pretty easy to pass a bill funding highway repairs and updates, if that was an option.

I know the I-75/71 bridge in Cincy is very overdue for replacement, one of these days it will be "in the news".

Hopefully, just because of a crack, not a failure.

Anyone know how a sizeable piece of steel can crack like that?  Vibration over time?
Clean shear-offs like that are usually caused by fatigue loading. Think of bending a paper clip back and forth until it breaks.

That said, IIRC, fatigue problems are found far more often in deep I-beams, not tubular members.

I know from standing on normal bridges they vibrate a LOT with traffic/trucks.  it's impressive.

In the state I live in, which isn’t terribly far from your state they had like a five year Odyssey to try to pass a bill to fix up roads.

granted, they had to pass a particularly small tax to help fund it, and that proves pretty difficult

Images: Tower built atop old downtown parking garage eyes summer debut | Urbanize Atlanta

Studios with just over 600 square feet begin at $1,560 monthly. On the flipside, the largest two-bedroom penthouses (1,315 square feet) are commanding rents of $5,500 that could seem astronomical by downtown standards.

Ouch, downtown here is not in my view a great place to live.  I'd pass, you can do better in midtown.
I’m always fascinated by the waves of economics that impact that. In theory, if the places are too expensive, they won’t sell. But just having more expensive housing probably drags the price people will accept up.

Which is exactly what we want them to do.

That said, despite knowing why they move, how they move, and can figure about how far it's moving, it's unsettling as hell when a semi goes by and the bridge deck starts bouncing like a trampoline.

the county here used COVID funds to put more gravel on rural roads

one of the school districts took the county to court wanting those funds spent elsewhere
but, the court sided with the county engineer's office

Steel Bridge Design Handbook | American Institute of Steel Construction (aisc.org)

I still have my copy of that from Steel and Reinforced Concrete Design. Probably out of date, though.

It's funny when you're growing up and discover how flexible bridges, skyscrapers, plane wings, etc are and have to be.  If they weren't, they'd fail in days, not decades.
