Dude, did OAM get your password? :57:

Dude, I've never said he's wrong about that. :)

Seriously though, when I look at the travel app recommendations for my own area, where I have a great deal of expertise in dining, all I can do is shake my head in wonder.

So, why would I think the masses in Paris or New York or Firenze would be any better????

Oddly, that was my takeaway as a difference between Italy and Paris.

In Italy, we were in Rome, the Cinque Terre, and Florence. The entire trip (other than grabbing a slice of crappy pizza in the Vatican cafeteria) was mostly walking into restaurants off the street. And with one exception (a sidewalk cafe in Florence), it was outstanding. It didn't seem to matter what restaurant we picked--even a sidewalk cafe near the Colosseum that was in a tourist trap area--we ate wonderfully.

In Paris, I'm not sure we had a restaurant meal I'd describe as memorable in our 3 1/2 days there. Tried to look places up on Yelp and other sites to at least make semi-informed choices.  Our best meal was getting appetizers in our hotel bar--and there none of it was French food lol...

I'm sure it's simply that we were at the wrong places, but I would have thought that we'd have a higher hit rate in a city known for its food.
I found the same to be true when I was in Italy.  Didn't matter what restaurant I walked into off the street was great.

Been a long time since I was in Paris and I can say that no place that I ate there stood out as good, let alone great. Now done in Nimes and Nice, I thought the food was good.

Only thing that made Paris great for me was The Louvre, Notre Dame and driving down to Versailles.

Heck, it could be even worse in Paris or Firenze. If I'm on an American web site like Yelp where most of the reviews are in English, I'm not even dealing with Parisian or Italian masses--the reviews may even be dominated by American tourists!

That said, these sites aren't infallible, and they're not a great substitute for good local knowledge or expert reviews. But most of the time, they're better than nothing. It's one of the many filters I'll use to try to get an idea of where to go, when I'm in a place where I have no personal knowledge to fall back on.

Heck the Parisians probably deliberately give high ratings to bad restaurants just to trick us Americans.

Bastages!

I’ve found yelp and opentable to be mostly garbage and useless. TripAdvisor has been on the money no matter where I’ve been in the world. It’s never failed me.

We've discussed rail here a bit, so I wanted to pass this one along. Full disclosure--Cato is a libertarian think tank and this author is pretty much their expert on dismantling transit plans... So it's certainly not fair & balanced.

Yet I can't find much fault in it.

Just looking at the top 5 in my own specific suburb, 3 of the top 5 are good to quite good, and the other two are absolute trash.  Like, vomit-inducing garbage.

So you've got a 60% chance of a good meal in my town if you trust Tripadvisor, and a 40% chance of repeatedly shitting your own pants within about 6-8 hours.

BTW for something like Yelp, you can't just look at the star rating and go with that... It's always important to read reviews too. With that you can get a much better sense of the the quality of the establishment based on the quality of the reviews you read.

In general I agree, but reading through all of the pretentious rambling to get to the few nuggets of helpful commentary, is usually more than I can take.

Leave utee's Trattoria out of this

There is a really tasty trattoria in my neck of the woods, but I can't lay claim to it in any way, other than being a happy customer upon occasion.

You realize I'm just clowning on you, OAM... I may have a lower opinion of "the masses" than even you do.
