I don't get the appeal of any large cities

San Francisco was nice to visit, but I prefer staying north of the bay in Sausalito or Tiburon and riding the ferry to the city and back.

Dirty, obnoxious, dangerous, expensive. can describe any city over 100,000 people
but, I'm a small town guy
Yup, it's all a matter of perspective.

Orlando is nothing but giant shopping malls, giant theme parks, and awful food with nothing but chain restaurants in the middle of the state with no beaches

Giant shopping malls - Yes
Giant theme parks - Yes
Awful food - Definitely not true.

Orlando is certainly filled with a ton of chain restaurants, as is every other big city in America.

However, it also had an amazing variety of quality restaurants.  Disney itself is home to some really good dining.

I saw you mention downtown Orlando in another post.  Downtown is filled with quality spots.  The Colonial Dr/Mills area has plenty of options.  It's also known the little Vietnam and little Korea area with tons of mom and pop places with go and grab some authentic food.

I live about an hour from Orlando, and have explored it extensively.  The food scene is top notch.

Lol, I was just there. Funny you say that.

For me it’s the best city in the US. It has everything- best food city in US, the culture, nightlife, museums, sight seeing, just everything.

The corona and the inept leadership of dick for brains Cuomo and that stupid sack of shit DeBlasio definitely changed it though. It’s gotten a lot worse and it’s 100% because of those two stupid dickheads.
Hence the reason I have no desire to go there again. It was fine (OK, still dirty) before these DB's wrecked the city.

I'd rather go to Chicago, but that's being wrecked too. People are leaving downtown neighborhoods in droves.

Didn't Emeril and other chefs come in there to open up shop?

Emeril’s restaurant in Orlando was at one of the theme parks- and it was obviously just a licensing deal cash grab- bc that place was GOD awful. Nothing like any of the restaurants he owns and operates and is actually at in New Orleans- those are great. The one in Orlando was god awful. I don’t think it’s even around anymore.

For me- Orlando kinda sucks. I’m all south florida through and through. Food scene in Miami & Fort Lauderdale is great, lots of independent little spots that are terrific. Martorano’s in Ft Lauderdale is probably the best Italian-American food I’ve ever had even if it’s overpriced, and Pane & Vino in Miami Beach is the best Italian restaurant in the US- and I don’t think it’s particularly close. You’re not finding spots like this in Orlando- they just don’t exist.

It’s honestly really sad to see. I really love NYC. I have a lot of friends and family from NY- on all different sides of the political aisle- and the only thing they all seem to agree on is they all despise Cuomo & DeBlasio.

I like Chicago, but I feel like everything Chicago has NYC has but more of and better. And I hate the Chicago “pizza”- so I always knock the city down a peg just for that. The dangerous Chicago neighborhoods are more dangerous than the most dangerous NYC neighborhoods. There are just a lot more people in NYC, hence why it might seem more dangerous.

The fancy overpriced restaurants that are chains like a hotel or Capital Grille are honestly usually the worst.

Last time I ate at Capital Grille was probably a year ago- and it was $96 for a single Waygu steak that wasn’t even Waygu- and honestly the steak kinda sucked.

Give me a place like Peter Luger’s in Brooklyn that has I think only 2 locations- all day everyday over places like Capital Grille or Morton’s or Ruth’s Chris.

The only thing I don’t like about Paris are the people- they’re assholes who don’t like Americans and they show it.

Oh and the tourist trap restaurants. Most of the restaurants you just walk into off the street are gross. You have to know where to go. But that’s probably true of any major tourist city.
Oddly, that was my takeaway as a difference between Italy and Paris.

In Italy, we were in Rome, the Cinque Terre, and Florence. The entire trip (other than grabbing a slice of crappy pizza in the Vatican cafeteria) was mostly walking into restaurants off the street. And with one exception (a sidewalk cafe in Florence), it was outstanding. It didn't seem to matter what restaurant we picked--even a sidewalk cafe near the Colosseum that was in a tourist trap area--we ate wonderfully.

In Paris, I'm not sure we had a restaurant meal I'd describe as memorable in our 3 1/2 days there. Tried to look places up on Yelp and other sites to at least make semi-informed choices.  Our best meal was getting appetizers in our hotel bar--and there none of it was French food lol...

I'm sure it's simply that we were at the wrong places, but I would have thought that we'd have a higher hit rate in a city known for its food.

Agree 100%, and I've always said this. In Italy or Sicily, in just about any city there- you can walk into a place off the street and 9 times out of 10 you're going to have an outstanding meal. I've only had ONE bad spot walking in off the street- and that was a place right by the Vatican. I will say this though- Paris is a much bigger city than any cities in Italy- way more people and I'm sure the rent prices for the restaurants in Paris are sky high compared to that of most restaurants in Italy- so what a lot of them probably do in Paris- they pay a ton of money to be near hotspots and tourists and then cheapen the F out of their food. Makes for a great location and vibe, but disgusting food.

The first couple times I went to Paris- went to a bunch of crap tourist trap places by the Eiffel Tower and Louvre. Then I discovered the TripAdvisor app, and every time I've been back to Paris I've followed that app and have had some outstanding meals there. There are some amazing restaurants in Paris- you just have to know how to find them. I'd ditch Yelp if I were you and download TripAdvisor.

Most of the time I've been in Europe, it hasn't been as a tourist, but rather as an expat living/working there for months at a time.  So in most cases, the restaurants I've gone to, I've been taken there by my local friends/colleagues.  That's a pretty fantastic way to do it.  Nothing but great experiences.

I've also been as a tourist and when I haven't been able to grab a recommendation from a nearby local friend, I've found that some of the guidebooks have great advice.  Rick Steves never steered me wrong, and another lesser-known one, I think Lonely Planet, also had some good recommendations.

I've never used travel apps because the masses are stupid and make stupid recommendations in general.

And, I haven't been to NYC in over 20 years, but as a young and single 20-something professional with more money in my pocket than I knew what to do with, I thought it was pretty great at the time.
