So this gets you down the rabbit hole.

People who move close to election day can't vote unless there are hoops jumped through. DMVs in many places make things difficult. It turns a casual lack of inertia into a way to make things more difficult (and then people will lament when orgs pop up to drive people places to get IDs updated and such).

I have a sticker I need to put on my car. I haven't gotten around to it. None the less, I'm allowed to drive.
Proper ID could be a driver's license, even if it is not correct, if you bring in a lease, utility bill, etc.

how difficult can a DMV make things?
how many people move close to an election day?  What is "close" a week or two, a month or two?
I don't see these hoops as difficult.

and as you know.... if you don't get that sticker on your car in a reasonable time, you won't be allowed to drive that car.

190918-GMPBreport-respiratorypathogen.pdf (centerforhealthsecurity.org)

Go to page 73 to find the above paragraph.

Thanks. At 84 pages, I should be careful what I wish for, huh?

But even the full paragraph offers a lot more context.

tl;dr being "don't trust your local government, trust the WHO!"

Is that what you were going for when you posted it initially? :57:

Haha.

That was written when the WHO had a little more cred on the street. That's gone.

It's actually a good report. Better than I thought.

had more cred, but probably didn't deserve it in hindsight

Government red tape is good actually, if it prevents voting

many things have more and more difficult hoops than voting

if you want to vote, make the effort

if you want to drive a car, it takes effort

if you want to take a commercial flight, it takes effort

if you want to travel to another country, it takes effort

if you want to buy a gun, it takes effort

if you want to qualify for federal or state monetary assistance, it takes effort

if you don't want to make the effort - do things illegally and hope you don't get caught

elections are run by the government, what would you expect

The DMV here was shockingly efficient.  We were out in 30 minutes, new DL, and registered to vote.  Very easy.

I was prepared to spend hours.  The wife was shocked as well.

I've been in two good DMV states as an adult. Granted, one was good for a kinda silly reason.

Ca was a dystopian nightmare.

Same down here. 30 minutes for DL, plates, title, voting registration and payment.

All with the same person.

In Illinois, that's a 4 hour endeavor, with 10 different people and 10 different lines.

I think CA has improved somewhat from older days, with the appointment system.

Still, it can be very hit-or-miss depending on which DMV you go to. I usually like to go down to San Clemente. Last time I had to renew my license (two summers ago) I was seriously out in about 15-20 minutes.

But I have heard that some other locations are nightmares. The one closest to me is right near the giant retirement community, and usually slow as molasses.

Here in AZ, my ID doesn't expire until I'm 65, so I don't see why I should replace it when I move.
