Those are more of a school/town pride thing. I hadn't considered their benefit for aviation.

Any lettering that isn't vertical and over 20' is going to be for aviation, right?  Like oversized signage on roofs, like fireworks places and such?  
Most every little town on the Navajo Rez with a mountain next to it has a big white letter there.

Depending on the size of the lot, you could make a mint on the land even if the new owner intended to tear it down to build fresh. Most of the lots here, in addition to the houses being small, are pretty much postage stamps.
