Heck, where do you think this website physically exists? I don't think it's a server in Drew's house. I don't know the specific situation, but I'm guessing it's in a data center somewhere. That's what happens when you rent server space to host a web site. That server sits in a data center.

I was being cheeky because obviously my employment benefits from all this data center spending. But let's be honest... If we don't have data centers, we don't have internet.

the massive spending spree and explosion of new data centers that are being built in the last few years is not to house servers for hosting internet web sites. they are for AI and they demand WAY more power and cooling than your run of the mill old school data centers filled with servers to host websites and internet forums.

I’ve heard on various sites that data centers use a lot of water, but where does it go?  Simply using water for cooling purposes doesn’t necessarily mean it’s “ used”. Now if there are cooling towers, they cool via evaporation so it’s definitely getting consumed. If they use chillers the water just runs in a loop. 

We used river water in our cooling towers in the chemical plant I worked in. They filter it a little but it’s definitely not potable water and we had a lot of issues with equipment scaling.

What I’m asking is if there’s a claim that “ data centers use lots of water” but nobody really goes into detail on that. 

It’s entirely possible that the water that is used is not fully potable and is reclaimed. Our facility uses a lot of water that gets treated and discharged back into the river. The only water we consume is what gets evaporated in the cooling towers.
