Hypothetical Bowl Lineups

Once again, time for that thread that nobody but me cares about!  The thread of potential bowl lineups under different configuration.

First, my ideal setup, which checks all the boxes for me, while acknowledging we aren't going backwards.  Granted it also involves a bowl reduction, which isn't happening.  It's 20 bowls, divided into 5 tiers of 4 bowls, with the top tier doubling as an unseeded playoff.  Unseeded inasmuch as the traditional bowl slots are maintained, independent of seeding.  Winners advance the a seeded semifinal on campus, with a neutral site championship.

Each tier consists of the the top available team from each P5 conference, 2 at larges, and 1 Go5 champion.  Teams are actually selected in merit owner, not eyeball order, and the bowls move from bottom tier up as you progress.

This (i) preserves traditional bowls; (ii) restores the greatness of NYD; (iii) makes bowl eligibility something worthwhile; (iv) adds at least some value to tacking on wins 7, 8, and 10, etc, as opposed to now; (v) makes the Group of 5 CCGs more interesting as play ins to a bowl, like the mid-major conference tourneys in basketball.

Can you move the Citrus to Lambeau, so as to not give Florida a home advantage?

I like the flexibility and honestly think bowls need to mix up tie-ins a lot more. Need to get big ten teams to the Texas and Ca bowls more, less Florida. 

I also am pro more bowls as I enjoy a good nine-or 10-win win mid-major. Those always interest me more that 7-5 offs, but I get why that happens. Wouldn’t mind more major/mid-major mixing, but that’s life. 

Anyway, interesting look.

I think it's amazing that as recently as 1991, the ACC champion went to the Citrus Bowl.  
In the old system, we'd have a mess on our hands, as I think Clemson could have moved over to the Sugar to face LSU, you'd still have OSU out in Pasadena.  Another split NC, which is okay.  



I just hate the total unwillingness to have a floating "if necessary" game when there are still 2 unbeaten P5 teams.  OSU loses, fine, LSU-Clemson winner is the champ!  OSU wins?  They then play the winner of LSU-Clemson!  It would be the old system that would occasionally morph into a 3-team playoff of sorts.


Why is that such a big, fat NO?  You schedule the venue, you pay, say, half to whoever is standing in the way of it happening if it indeed doesn't happen, and play it if you need to.  It's so simple, it'll never happen.

I'd like few bowls.  A "bowl team" should mean inside the top 25-all year type of team.  
Orange (XII champ* vs At-large)
Sugar (SEC champ vs At-large)
Cotton (XII champ* vs At-large)
Rose (PAC champ vs B1G champ)
(*The XII champ gets to pick which one it wants, it doesn't get 2 "big" spots every year.  An OU champ would want to go to the Orange, while a Texas champ the Cotton...)

Fiesta (at-large vs at-large)
Citrus (SEC or ACC vs XII)
Gator (SEC or ACC vs B1G)
Holiday (PAC vs at-large)

If there's also a Liberty and/or Sun Bowl(s), that's okay.  But no need really.
I do wish there were more this conference or that conference to the tie-ins.  Avoid too much repetition naturally.

UGA has never played in the Fiesta Bowl.

I think they have played in every other bowl except some obscure ones like the Pinstripe or the Pouhlan Weedeater  or the Oil Bowl.

There was such a thing once.

Didn't Georgia Tech win their co-NC by beating a fairly meh (like 8-4?) Nebraska team?

9-2 coming in. They started 8-0 and got to No. 3 and then lost to Colorado and Oklahoma across the last three games.

Top of the ACC wasn't bad that year, also beat bad UGA and mediocre South Carolina.
