F150s in the top trim levels (King Ranch, Platinum) plus the specialty pickup models like the Tremors and the Raptors, are all above $75,000.  And they sell a ton of them.

I do agree that the typical buyers of these vehicles are not likely want EVs.

Yeah, I might pay $75K for a M-B hybrid. Definitely not paying that for a Lincoln/Ford.

The Lincolns which are Fords basically are of course higher.

The mass market is nearer the $30-50 K range.

The most expensive Lincoln Navigator is the 2025 Black Label LWB, with a starting price of approximately $121,485, which can go even higher with additional luxury features and custom options. The Black Label trim is the highest tier, offering exclusive interior themes and materials, with the "LWB" (Long Wheelbase) version providing the most space and a higher price point compared to the standard length model.

Excellent point.  Ford Expeditions in the top trim levels, which are the same as the F150, all start at $77K and range up over $100K as well.

The cheapest brand new F150 I can find at my local dealer is $41K.

Anyway, point being, a TON of Ford vehicles at or over $75,000, sell extremely well.

My guess is 90% of Ford's US profits come off F150s and Expeditions and the slightly smaller one, which also gets pricey.

Nobody can make much off a $30 K vehicle using the dealer method.

Right, but those aren't exactly "mass market" vehicles either. It's not that they have trouble selling them--there's not a huge competition from the traditional "luxury" marques in the fancy pickup truck category. Whereas in luxury electric SUVs there is plenty of competition. 

My take though is that luxury price tag ($75K and above) vehicle demand is by its nature a niche market. Then luxury price tag EV demand is but a subset of that small market. And yet that's where seemingly all the EV makers wanted to play. So they oversaturated a limited slice of the market. 

I agree with Mdot that in that tiny slice of a market, most of the buyers there are less interested in the blue oval or the bowtie, than a traditional "luxury" brand. 

But the key is that selling $75K EVs is just a self-limiting market. Someone isn't trying to choose between an Accord and luxury $75K EV. And there are a HELL of a lot more Accords on the road. If you want widespread BEV adoption, you need cars that are competitive in price and features to an Accord.

Sure but that's not what MDOT said.

Putting what you said in another way, when these EVs are priced into the luxury market price band, but have the amenities and a fit and finish that's below that of a base-level Honda Civic, that's where the problems arise.

I'd guess the Tesla Y is in that range, and the sedan.  They are $40-50?  Our miniSUV was $40.  

Chevy is coming out with something around $35 K that might be competitive.

Powering it will be a new LFP battery pack with cells from China, which will help keep the cost down, allowing GM to price the Bolt EV at or below $30,000, while still turning a profit on it.
The new Bolt will return for the 2027 model year with no federal tax credit to drop its price into the low $20,000 range, like its predecessor.


They already market this one starting under $35 K.

And I'll add to that sentiment that, I think there WERE some buyers who were willing to pay luxury prices for non-luxury EVs simply because they wanted to own an EV for their own personal reasons, but that was a small market and it's completely played out now.  There are not any new, incremental buyers, that are going to pay that "saving the planet" premium, for an EV that's not even as luxurious as an average mid-market sedan.

But yes. I agree. 

However, I think Mdot's point was about brand snobbishness, not about amenities or fit & finish. Which I think absolutely exists. From everything I've heard, the Mustang Mach E was a very nicely appointed car.

Yeah, that is something I was getting at but didn't really get into... And I think it's also true of people willing to pay luxury prices for luxury EVs. Those who REALLY wanted them, bought them. Now they have them. Now it'll be years until they get into a refresh cycle. All the while, a bunch of automakers flooded the market with MORE models and more inventory than the original market probably could have supported, even IF the original market hadn't mostly already satisfied their demand for now...

Ultimately, the EV makers need to be making mainstream cars if they want mainstream adoption. They all thought they'd get a big slice of the high end market, but the pie wasn't big enough for them all to eat.
