How badly do U.S. buyers want EVs? We're about to find out

Huh... Ford's CEO seems to be saying exactly what I was saying...

Quote
Ford CEO says customers are not interested in $75,000 EVs

Ford (F) CEO Jim Farley says US buyers aren't interested in $75,000 electric vehicles — and the automaker doesn't want to keep living in Tesla's (TSLA) shadow.

"We've learned ... people are not willing to pay [a] $30,000 premium for that big battery on a [$50,000], $60,000 utility," Farley told Yahoo Finance at Ford's Pro Accelerate conference in Detroit, Mich. "But they're willing to buy a $30,000 EV if they save $2,000 a year compared to gas costs."

...

He emphasized that electrification is accelerating abroad, and the US is just one part of a worldwide market. Part of those innovation efforts comes in the form of a new "universal electric vehicle platform" aimed at affordability. Farley said the goal is a $30,000 EV that appeals to mainstream buyers while maintaining competitive performance and features.

Well, a $30 K EV might be fine for the customer, but what sort of profit would Ford be able to make off that?  In Europe, where gasoline is $7-8 per gallon, and electricity is not that much higher, it starts to make sense, I suspect, I don't know what their typical away from home charging costs are.  I keep going over the math with gas around here at $3 per and it's not good at all.  I'd love to hear from the folks who live in this building about their experience with the two downstairs chargers.

I think it can be summed up more succinctly as people aren’t willing to spend north of $75,000 on a fucking Ford vehicle. Period.

The only Ford vehicles anyone is willing to pay $75k+ for are probably that new Shelby Mustang and the top of the line heavy duty F250-F350 trucks- and yeah of course absolutely nobody buying the muscle car or the heavy duty diesel truck want EV versions. Lol.

Perhaps the least-expected model on this list, the latest Ford F-150—one of America's most popular new vehicles for over four decades—starts at under $40k but can cost far more as you ascend the trim ladder. Both the King Ranch and Platinum trims begin at $74,905, but exceed $75k once you add the destination charge. At this level, power is derived from the brand's 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine with 400 hp, or you can pay a little extra for the 430-hp hybrid version. Equipped with options like 22-inch wheels, full quilted leather seats, and a twin-panel moonroof, the price of the F-150 quickly flies past $90,000. It's not necessary to spend this much on an F-150, but the option is there for truck fans who want the best.
