Change the oil regularly and keep it.  Cars today are mostly good for 150K plus, at least in my experience other than that GTI disaster.

That's the goal, honestly. Especially considering that I WFH more often than not, and I can split the mileage between the Flex and my Jeep when the weather is nice--and the weather in CA is usually nice :57:

When my first minivan was getting a bit old, it had maybe 70,000 on it, I started putting $100 a month into a mutual fund (which did well at the time) thinking I could use it as a down payment on the replacement.  My finances at the time were only "OK", but I kept at it, the minivan kept running, and one day I noticed I had $18 K in that account which was enough for a new one.

So, I bought a nicer new one (different make).  I had both for a while, gave the old one to a food for homeless group I was supporting, and they kept it until it hit 175,000 miles and traded it to a church somewhere.  Just after I sold my mutual fund the stock market dropped pretty hard.  Anyway, it was a neat way to "prepay" for my next vehicle.

Not having a car payment is choice.  I'm about to pay off the condo loan.  I lived a few years post divorce with some pretty tight finances.

My car is almost 17 years old with 170k miles on it, and still doing well in it's main job.  I suspect the clutch will eventually go--because that's just a thing that happens, but also because I feel some things while driving that make me think it's not in as good of shape as it used to be--and I've mostly already decided if that happens I'm not going to spend the $ to replace it, I'm just going to get a new vehicle.

On the downside, the compressor, while pretty new, has some weird thing going on where it takes forever to really kick in the cold air, and that's a bad thing for about 4 months out of the year here.  It blows cool air right away, it's just not as cold as it's supposed to be, and when the summer really hits, it can't keep up and is not nearly as comfortable as it's supposed to be.  Eventually, it gets its act together and starts blowing freezing cold air, but it takes a while.  That was okay for a couple of years because I wasn't commuting far.  Now, however, with a 50-55 minute drive home every evening, it's going to be brutal, because the car is sitting out in the sun all day and it will take almost all the way home to really kick in, and I'll be home by the time it gets comfortable.

There's some other cosmetic/non-essential things that bug me about it, but just as I've decided I'm not going to spend $ to get a new clutch, I'm also not going to spend $ to fix non-essentials on an older car that may crap out on me any day.

I'm at 105K on the Benz. It's a 2014, and it looks new.

We put 5-6K miles per year these days, and it's about to go to much less when the wife's new ride shows up in a week or two.

Is it something that should be on the sporty thread rather than the EV thread? :72:

It's a Chevy Equinox. And it won't be in my garage. That is for the Benz and the EV golf cart.

I've put 16,000 miles on the tires I bought last November
