Are Hybrids Good for Long-Distance Driving?

I think this downplays one issue, a hybrid is heavier than a regular version and that weight USUALLY causes a reduction in highway mileage because the hybrid function is nearly useless.  Our car gets quite a bit less mpg highway than the EPA claims.

The 10 Bestselling EVs of 2025 (So Far)

More and more electric models join the fray each quarter, but while the market for EVs gets increasingly crowded, the usual suspects remain on top. Tesla's dominance is still unmatched and car shoppers continue to show a desire for compact crossovers, from the retro-futuristic Hyundai Ioniq 5 to the understated Volkswagen ID.4. With the first three months of 2025 complete, we scoured the data and created a list of the 10 bestselling EVs of 2025 so far.

A couple of notes before we begin: some automakers don't break out sales numbers for every model in their lineup or for electric versions of nameplates also sold with gas powertrains. This is mainly an issue with Rivian, which typically sits at the edge of the top-10 sales list. Rivian says it built 14,611 vehicles and delivered 8640 units in the first quarter but doesn't specify how many of these are the R1T, R1S, or its commercial van, so none of the Rivians are included here. Tesla also doesn't break out sales numbers for individual models, although in this case, we used estimates reported by Automotive News to get an idea of where Tesla's popular EVs landed.

You have to admit, aesthetically, this goes really, really well with the Cybermen from Dr. Who.  To the point where I am ready to believe it's an intentional nod.

They only plan to build 25 Celestiques this year, which poses one obvious question.  The second for me is who buys these things?  Obviously someone pretty wealthy, but beyond that.  I think any car over say $150 K is a status statement.  It hardly matters whether some other make it "better".  The status of a Cadillac is simply not the same as that of a Rolls, or even high end Mercedes, in my view.  The status of a Corvette is not that of a Porsche, even if the former is faster on a  track.

In terms of being "unique", the Caddy will stand out, for a while anyway.  Maybe someone in LA is tired of pulling up to the Club in his Rolls when there is one in front and three just behind, so he wants one of these.

There's a place for you to install one on your own.  It's designed to be extremely modular with easy add-ons and customizations by the customer.  Obviously when you add stuff you're increasing your cost to buy, but they're giving the customer complete flexibility in picking and choosing what options are valuable.

Overall I like the concept and I think it will play well with younger millennials and genZ.  I think the use case fits in the short-range urban get-around-town market space, with the additional utility of the small truck bed for suburban owners with yards and projects.  But is it TOO bare-bones and after add-ons, is it still going to be cheap enough?  Not sure.

I actually like the fact that the stereo is de-coupled from the rest of the vehicle.  I don't need my radio/stereo or whatever you call it nowadays rolling down the windows and activating all these features.  I had to change the radio in my Silverado and now I've lost functionality of some of the trucks features.

As I've thought about it... My worry is that the target market, the market who can afford it, is also the target market that might have two massive problems with this truck:

  • They live in apartments or other shared housing where they might not be able to charge at home. 
  • They have less money so they might be more in line with a "lease" model for a vehicle than a "purchase" model for a car, and this being a new entrant into the automotive market, leasing is a MAJOR hurdle for a company financially. Maybe Bezos has enough money to float it, but if they can't offer leasing, they may cut out a big portion of the market. 

I think the concept of the truck is cool for that millenial/genZ market... Whether the reality works for them is unknown.

Yeah both are good points.  EVs really aren't an apartment-friendly mobility solution.  And even at $20,000, although it's inexpensive compared to many other new vehicles and especially for an EV, it's still not super-cheap.
