As of today, there are about 85 million EVs on the road worldwide, with the USA accounting for only about 10 million of those.
Yes, this number of electric vehicles is already impacting global fuel demand and is expected to continue doing so significantly as adoption increases.

EVs displace millions of barrels of oil demand annually. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that in 2025 alone, EVs will reduce oil demand by around 1.8 million barrels per day, a figure that will grow as more vehicles transition to electric.

Global oil demand is projected to grow moderately in the coming years, with the International Energy Agency (IEA) forecasting a slowdown in demand growth for the remainder of 2025 and 2026. The IEA anticipates that global oil demand will reach 103.9 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2025, with non-OECD demand continuing to rise while OECD demand declines. However, economic headwinds and increasing electric vehicle (EV) sales are expected to dampen demand growth.

I'm hoping reduced demand with the same supply w/o a recession

As EVs reduce demand, producers will reduce supply because both would be gradual.  A steep drop in price would suggest producers were unable to cut back quickly enough.

My last fillup at Costco was $2.70, fo #2 is not a ridiculous possibility.  But a lot of the cost is taxes and additives.

hoping as they cut back supply gradually, the competitive market could settle at the $1.99 price
we're not too awful far from that - I'm not expecting 50 cent a gallon gas as in my youth

There could be a point at which oil producers produce even at very low prices per barrel because a little profit is better than none.  Abouy half the price of gasoline is the price of oil, which today is $62-65/bbl.  So, you'd be looking at a steep cut in oil costs to get to $2.

I don't think this projection will turn out this way.

It does seem odd that so many people who were pro-EV previously, now are anti-Tesla, which to date has been the standard-bearer for EV, at least in the West.

Reeks of virtue signaling to me.

My wife was chatting with a lady in the garage about her new Tesla, she said she loved it, but hates Elon, and went on a tirade about Elon which was perhaps overstated.

I noticed her Tesla is no longer in the garage in the same space.

Much of life is virtue signaling.
