I hate standing in boats all day.  Guess I'll be exploring my career in leather goods.

I think gondoliers and artisan leather goods both attract couples...

...but couples with VERY different personalities...

We're headed to London in a few weeks. We had booked the flight and the hotel, but my wife and I are literally both so burned out by 2026 that we just couldn't wrap our minds around planning. We had a list of things we wanted to see/do, but it seemed like we just couldn't actually do the research to figure out when/where/how to do it... I was worried that we were going to get there and spend a week just walking around going to pubs because we hadn't planned anything--not that that sounds all that bad lol...

But since I needed a place to start, I turned to a travel agent... My good friend Claude.

Claude took our list, at my behest, and planned out cohesive days of sightseeing, organizing around what days certain things are/aren't open, what days things like the changing of the guard occurs, etc. I had it arrange things so that geographically, it made sense, i.e. putting things that were close together physically close together in the schedule. I even had it pull restaurant recommendations and provide "flex" activities that we can pivot to if we have time.

It gave me a nice document with everything neatly organized and notes on it all, as well as a spreadsheet file that lays everything out in a schedule by day and time slot... It's told me which things need reservations/tickets in advance, and generally made life easy.

I'm still going to have to go through and independently validate some of this stuff, because we all know AI makes mistakes. But it provided a really nice starting point.

Can you do one for me @betarhoalphadelta for our trip to Madrid (2 days) and Malaga (2 days) please?

In Madrid we are staying at the Doubletree near the palace. In Malaga we are staying at the American right by the train station.

I can do so, but recommend trying it yourself. You can use any of the free ones... For something like this, I don't think it'll be limiting.

The key with AI is that you have to give it as much detailed prompting as you can. For example, on our list were 14 different things we wanted to see/do. And I gave it this prompt *after* it had that list:

We will be staying at <hotel>. Please take the list of things to do and organize them as single-day excursions. Meaning that the goal is to arrange days where the location, amount of time needed to see each attraction, etc, are cohesive. Also, please recommend lunch and dinner spots in the vicinity for each day. The restaurants should largely be British in nature (and can include good pubs / pub food), but other specialties in London such as curry will also work.

I then refined it with actual travel dates, etc.

Generally AI doesn't perform as well when you give it open-ended stuff like "plan me two days in Madrid and two days in Malaga"... You want to give it specifics about what you're looking for, and I don't know those specifics for you...

I take a semi-open approach.

"I'm trying to accomplish X, here's 2-3 factors / constraints. What specifics do you want from me?"

Then answer all those questions plus add in any relevant details you feel AI didn't address.

"Here's all your answers plus a couple more things I think are relevant. Please review this and then ask any clarifying questions you may have. Do not build anything yet."

If we're on the same page, let it run.

I don't know how well this works with the free models, but it's working very well with Opus 5.5 right now.

@847badgerfan

I agree with bwar, try it yourself using one of the freebies.  It's actually a lot of fun IMO, it's incredible seeing what it can do for you with relatively little input and work from your side.

Mine is the paid...

I've mostly used the free version of ChatGPT, and it's been pretty crap at spitting out documents like a spreadsheet.  It thinks it can, and it can produce an .xlsx file.....it just makes no sense and is completely unhelpful.

I've gotten a pretty decent feel for the kinds of things it does well, and what it doesn't, and producing documents is not one of the former.

Also, I once gave it a "shapes puzzle" from an online IQ test it thought it could tackle.  It failed, but bless its heart, it sure did try over and over, with confidence.  It actually could "see" the image I fed it correctly, but it couldn't get the right answer, and its explanations for the answers it gave were clearly hallucinations flailing in the wind.  It couldn't say "Yeah, I don't know the answer to this one."
