It is actually much worse than that though.  From 1968-2019 they were:
  • 1-39 against Michigan (the win was in 1987)

Getting ready for #9 IU at #3 tOSU:
I heard (not sure on this) that this is the first top-10 match-up in IU program history.  That is amazing*. 

IU is 12-76-5 all-time against Ohio State (0.156) but it is actually worse than that.  One third (four) of their wins came before Ohio State joined the league (1901, 1903, 1904, 1905) and fully half of their wins came prior to 1925. 

The Hoosiers won the 1924 game against Ohio State 12-7 in Columbus.  At that point they were 6-4-1 against the Buckeyes (0.591).  Since then they are 6-72-4 (0.098).  Oddly, the Hoosiers have fared marginally better against the Buckeyes in Columbus than at home.  Five of their six wins and three of the four ties since 1925 occurred in Columbus where they are 5-46-3 over that stretch (0.120) while they are just 1-26-1 at home (0.054). 

*It is also only sorta-true.  
The fact that IU has never played a top-10 match-up was so unbelievable to me that I had to double-check it.  My immediate thought was that their RoseBowl in 1968 (1967 Season) should have been a top-10 match-up.  It sort-of was.  That was in a weird era when the AP only ranked ten teams.  The Hoosiers had been horrible in 1966 (1-8-1) so they started unranked.  They got to 5-0 on 10/21 with a win over Michigan and they were ranked #10 in the 10/23/67 poll.  They then steadily climbed as they continued winning until reaching 8-0 and #5 (one of the seven top-5 appearances in program history) in the 11/13/67 poll.  Then they got dump-trucked by Minnesota (33-7) and dropped completely out of the rankings (remember it was only a top-10).  A week later they beat #3 Purdue 19-14 and moved back into the rankings at #4 in the poll.  Their RoseBowl opponent was #1 USC so that sounds like not only a top-10 but a top-5 match-up but I guess it kinda doesn't count because there was no poll at the time because the AP had already released their final poll.  Eh, I don't buy that logic. 

The 17 times that IU has been a top-10 team:
  • 10/13/1945:  #8 Indiana beat nr Nebraska 54-14
  • 10/20/1945:  #8 Indiana beat nr Iowa 52-20
  • 10/27/1945:  #8 Indiana beat nr Tulsa 7-2
  • 11/3/1945:  #5 Indiana beat nr Cornell (Iowa) 46-6
  • 11/10/1945:  #6 Indiana beat nr Minnesota 45-0
  • 11/17/1945:  #4 Indiana beat nr Pitt 19-0
  • 11/24/1945:  #4 Indiana beat #18 Purdue 26-0
  • Ranked #4 in the 11/26/45 poll but played no game that week. 
  • Ranked #4 in the final (12/3/45) 1945 poll but played no more games that season. 
  • 10/28/1967:  #10 Indiana beat nr Arizona 42-7
  • 11/4/1967:  #7 Indiana beat nr Wisconsin 14-9
  • 11/11/1967:  #6 Indiana beat nr Michigan State 14-13
  • 11/18/1967:  #5 Indiana lost 33-7 to nr Minnesota
  • 1/1/1968:  #4 Indiana lost 14-3 to #1 USC<-- I'm counting this since both teams were ranked in the previous (final) poll. 
  • 9/27/1969:  #10 Indiana lost 17-14 to nr California
  • 11/14/2020:  #10 Indiana beat nr Michigan State 24-0
  • 11/21/2020:  #10 Indiana faces #3 Ohio State


Indiana's seven top-5 appearances are in bold.  They haven't been top-5 since the November 27, 1967 poll but that will change if they win this weekend. 
  • In their 14 games as a top-10 team the Hoosiers are 11-3. 
  • In their two games as a top-10 team against a ranked opponent the Hoosiers are 1-1. 
  • In their one top-10 (and top-5) match-up the Hoosiers are 0-1.

That's incredible. There was one "class" that went 2-1-1 vs OSU over their 4 years (87-90), and other than that they have lost every single game since 1968. That must have been some class. Who was in it?

That 1924 game was the first in "the Shoe" between those two teams, so indiana's record there would be 6-47-3, adding in that 1924 win along with the vactated 2010 loss; assuming that your record "since 1925" is correct (which I have no doubt that it is).

  • #2 UW at #4 NU
  • #5 PU at #9 MN
  • #6 IA at #11 PSU
  • #7 UMD vs #12 MSU
  • #8 UNL vs #13 IL
  • #10 M at #14 RU

Obviously the big B1G-E and B1G-W matchups of the last remaining undefeated teams in each division are the headline but I think that IA/PSU and M/RU are interesting as well.  I'm interested to see if PSU and Michigan have any fight left.

Those IU teams were pretty good and VERY good by Indiana's standards.  They went:
  • 8-4 in 1987
  • 8-3-1 in 1988
  • 5-6 in 1989
  • 6-5-1 in 1990
  • 27-18-2 overall

However, there are two sides to the coin.  That was at the transition between Earle Bruce and John Cooper and those teams were horrible by Ohio State's standards.  They went:
  • 6-4-1 in 1987
  • 4-6-1 in 1988
  • 8-4 in 1989
  • 7-4-1 in 1990
  • 25-18-3 overall


I don't need to look it up to tell you that is the last time a four-year class at IU did better than a four-year class at tOSU.

Nebraska is not a good team.  I took Illinois and the points.

I was optimistic the Huskers could find a way to win, but.... not so much

Yes, I' lucky to have been a huge fan back in the 90's when the Noles and the Huskers were at their prime and  had some classic battles in some big games.

my first Husker home game was as a freshman at the home opener in Lincoln vs Florida St.

I attended the games there in 85 and 86

I was in the Orange Bowl when Bowden won his first MNC.
