B1g divisional races heading into Thanksgiving weekend.
« on: November 23, 2020, 12:14:00 PM »
It is all but over in both divisions.  The big NU/UW and tOSU/IU showdowns produced prohibitive favorites in NU and tOSU.

B1G-E:

  • 4-0 Ohio State:  If the Buckeyes lose a game other than Illinois and end up tied (in the loss column) with Maryland, the Terps would win that tie because their loss (NU) was non-divisional.  Even if Ohio State's hyothetical loss was to IL, the Terps would probably still win based on a better record by their B1G-W opponents.
  • 2-1 Maryland:  The Terps have the next best shot after Ohio State but they need to win out and they need somebody to take out Ohio State.
  • 4-1 Indiana:  The Hoosiers need to win out (vs UMD, @UW, vs PU) but they also need two somebodies to take out Ohio State.
  • 2-3 Michigan:  The best Michigan could do is 5-3 with wins over tOSU and UMD but a loss to IU.  Thus, in addition to winning out they would also need Ohio State to lose out, Maryland to lose at least one other game, and Indiana to lose out.  One more loss eliminates them officially.
  • 1-3 Michigan State:  The Spartans can do no better than 4-3 so they need all kinds of help but they could theoretically get there if they win out, tOSU loses out, UMD loses at least two more, and IU loses at least two more.
  • 1-4 Rutgers is mathematically eliminated because 4-4 wouldn't be enough.
  • 0-5 Penn State is mathematically eliminated because 3-5 wouldn't be enough.

B1G-W:
  • 5-0 Northwestern:  The Wildcats are in a better position in the West than Ohio State is in the East.  They can do no worse than 5-3 and they already have wins over all of the one and two-loss teams.  Unless they lose at least twice or do not play any more games, they are going to the B1GCG.
  • 2-1 Wisconsin:  The Badgers need two somebodies to take out NU.
  • 3-2 Iowa:  The Hawkeyes need all kinds of help.
  • 2-2 Purdue:  The Boilermakers need all kinds of help.
  • 2-3 Minnesota:  If the Gophers finish 5-3 they'd have H2H wins over PU, UW, and NU but they'd still need NU to lose two other games and UW and PU to lose one other game each and Iowa to lose at least once more.
  • 2-3 Illinois:  The Illini need even more help than MN.
  • 1-3 Nebraska:  The Cornhuskers need all kinds of help.

The Wildcats have Michigan St, Minnesota and Illinois down the stretch.

They'll probably lose one of the three because, well, Northwestern.

1-2 is less likely obviously, but again, Northwestern.

Considering that Northwestern has wins over the next three teams in the division, one loss wouldn't matter.  Two would but probably only if UW won out and the Badgers still have to play IU and Iowa so that is certainly not a given.

In the race for east vs west, the west is currently up 3 games with 3 cross-division games rhis weekend

OSU-ILL
MSU-NW
Rut-Purdue

Of course the East-West race will clearly come down to the final week this year with 7 cross-division games all on the last day, including the CCG.

Just think if Wiscy had beaten NW last Saturday.  Now Wiscy gets its 3rd game cancelled making them ineligible for the CCG.

NW winning that game against Wiscy makes everything so much smoother in a year where nothing seems to go smooth

Soon we might have to start calling it the Northwestern Invitational instead of the Wisconsin Invitational.

It certainly does.  If Wisconsin had defeated Northwestern they would be clearly the best in the West (they still could be when at full strength) then ineligible due to the COVID outbreak at Minnesota.  That would have to be one of the most ironic examples of a team screwing their rival ever.

With the Northwestern win, Wisconsin's ineligibility is not much of an issue.  Northwestern is a prohibitive favorite for the CG anyway so who cares.

The one issue it might create is that I don't have any idea where an ineligible team will be placed in the rest of the Champions Week games.  After the CG it is supposed to be, as I understand it:
  • B1G-E #2 vs B1G-W #2
  • B1G-E #3 vs B1G-W #3
  •  . . .
  • B1G-E #7 vs B1G-W #7

It isn't clear to me whether the CG rules (ineligible if not six games) apply to #2 or not.  I don't *THINK* so, but I don't know for sure.  Lets assume that Wisconsin plays their other two remaining games (vIU, @IA) and finishes 4-1.  Does that make them B1G-W #2 or B1G-W #7?  Hopefully #2!
