I've tried most of the Kirkland bottled wines.  I'd say 80% are quite good values.  They don't yet have a box white under that name.

If you see their Chateauneuf du Pape, buy it, it's only there for a short while.

Maybe he did, sounded excessive to me, but then he has close to $100,000 in his sound system.  And of course he's using a tube amplifier most of the time, so he isn't using a digital signal.  I forget what kind of speakers he has, he runs two subwoofers with them, but they are large enough to appear not to need them.  No surround sound, he doesn't like it, and his amps don't appear to support it anyway.

He has two passions and goes after them with abandon, sound systems and cameras.  He has some pretty slick lenses for his Canon, I forget which type.  To each his own, he and his wife has good jobs, their kids are out of the house, the both like good wine (how we met), another hobby which can get excessive in a hurry.

I've done a good job getting back to mostly sub-$20 wines though, save my recent trip out west.  That Costco box wine of "Napa cab" is saving a lot of money for me, it's the equivalent of $3.25 a bottle, and remarkably decent.  I know some folks, distantly, who would show up and tell the wine store guy to fill up 2 cases for $2-10,000.

I dunno.  My palette is not that advanced, nor is my wallet.  I try to hit that bend in the curve where incremental is very expensive and the bend is "good enough".

I bought a Bose system a few years ago, and it sounded terrible.  Someone mentioned the terrible mid range stuff, and that was spot on.  I thought if I bought a "good" brand I would be OK.  Turns out Bose is no longer a good brand and honestly a cheap sound bar probably would have sounded better.  When my kid stepped on all of the cables and the media center I was secretly happy.  haha.

However I've been listening to just the TV speakers for months now and it is terrible.  I don't even watch TV in that room anymore.  So I need a new sound system pretty badly.  However, you can't trust the sales guys at the stores because they honestly don't know.  They just repeat what they have been told by management.  You can't trust reviews online because half of them are purchased and fake reviews.  This means I have to bite the bullet and do some serious research on my own, and I don't have that kind of time.

I'm big into finding that perfect bend in the curve as well.  At the end of the day it is in my living room, not a true home theater, so it doesn't have to be the best thing in the world.  On the flip side, I don't want another terrible sounding system like I had.  The wife also doesn't want gigantic speakers everywhere.  Maybe I'll just stick to headphones.  hahaha

Thanks for the info. I've passed it all on to my daily wine buyer. Heh.

As for sound... much depends on what you do with it. I need something good for music and concert videos. As such, even though I'm using a sound bar, I pass the iPod and TV sound wires through EQ's so I can adjust to my liking (as best as can be with a bar...). I look forward to getting my full system back soon, in Florida.

Speaking of... I'm sure whatever I buy down there will need a remodel and new appliances. So, there's that.

You can get decent reviews from the better magazines, but even there they usually say everything is great.  They at least give you a range of speakers, for example, in a price target.  A lot depends on how much you want to spend of course.

Getting a matched system is ideal, something where there is no single weak link, like the amp (in my case).  I think one is better off with precise, clean speakers than some over sized boom box that is muddy and unclear.  Larger speakers are not by any means always better.  You can do pretty well with nice bookshelf speakers and a hidden subwoofer.

I could use an upgrade on my sound system, but I'm putting new siding on the house this fall instead

My cheap sound bar with sub will have to do another 6 moths or year

I actually think a half decent sound bar and sub is the way to go for a whole lot of people.  Not many of us have time to sit quietly and enjoy MUSIC without doing something else.  If you're watching a good movie, a soundbar is going to be pretty good, you don't need to shake the walls.

Soundbars today have improved a lot.  Go to Costco and buy whatever is in your price range, my advice.

Put it in the bank at 0.01% interest and in 100 years, it probably won't be worth $30.

I could easily put them in my small living room, but they're English

don't you need to get German or Asian engineering to get the good stuff?
