I've been rewatching Friday Night Lights.  I think I am getting some great coaching tips from Coach Taylor in that series.

I liked the first season, but couldn't watch it once they hit the homicide/cover-up plot line, and the Mexican shark cure plot line.  Way too soap opera for me and I checked out.

For those that have never read the book, though, definitely do.  It's quite good.

Season 3 is better than 2, I think, which is rare.  I agree the murder thing was bizarre and contrived.

Yeah, Season 2 is bad, but I enjoyed the rest

Our local high school is playing for their first ever state championship tomorrow.  Took my son to the WPIAL (Western PA) championship a couple weeks ago.  They won WPIALs once before, back in the 50s, but for a long time, when Western PA was perhaps the mecca of football, teams just played for that WPIAL title, and only (relatively) recently (I think the 80s), had their winner advance into the state playoffs at the semis.  So the WPIAL final is really the de facto quarterfinal.

That's cool, I really enjoy going to high school football games and try to make a couple per year.

My local high school has won State in 3 of the past 8 years and played in the finals 2 others.  This is a suburb of Austin called Cedar Park, but it's definitely way more small-town than big-city feel in this place, and the entire town really gets behind the team.  The band and cheerleaders have also won state several times in recent years.  It's really fun how the community all rallies around the kids, a very neighborly feel.

To prove I'm not trying to show you up, Cedar Park High actually just got knocked out in the quarterfinals this year, and also my alma mater in Austin typically goes 3-7 and 2-8 on an annual basis, so no big head here. ;)

I own a couple of those.

And no cattle.

So I guess the saying is true. :)

I also own 7 pair of cowboy boots, but in my defense I only purchased 2 pair myself.  2 were gifts, and I inherited 3 pair when my grandfather passed.

Is the plural of "pair" also "pair"?  Seems like it is in poker, but what about real life?  Maybe just in the case of cowboy boots?
The HS where I teach is playing in the state football championship game tonight as seems to be the case with yours and ELA's.  We have won a lot of those games over the past decade.  And our band and cheerleaders can say the same.

I like that saying, especially with my French "cousins", who have no clue what it means.

My boss is French, born and lived there until he was about 15.  He moved to California and lived there for many years, but most recently has moved to Texas for about the past ten.  He wears cowboy boots every single day, which is a lot more often than I do, and he recently traded in his Cooper Mini for a Ford F250 diesel "Texas Edition."  Suffice to say, he loves it here and is fully bought-in.

I haven't seen him wear a cowboy hat though.

Arizona has combated some dominance at the top (4A, 5A, 6A) this year by creating an "open division" playoff of the top 8 teams from those classifications.
So you've got only the elite programs all playing for a sort of true, overall championship.  If they did something like that in FL, you'd get 50,000 people, lol.

.

Stupidly, the championship game is on Saturday at 4pm.  FFS
.
The one game I did go to this year was a local HS, between two 0-8 teams.  It was hard to watch.

I'm on first name basis with at least one referee on each of the Prep Bowl crews that worked this past weekend. Does that count?

My HS won its 2nd consecutive state title in WI this past month at Division 1.  Wing T offense.   Interestingly,  the county had 4 of 7 state champs this year.
Trivia: JJ Watt and bros. are from this county and yours truly was a prosecutor there briefly.   Good football.  I don't remember charging too many cases from his neck of the woods.   We didn't sniff the state title when I wore the uniform but it wasn't because of any bad long snaps, I promise you that.

PA split from 4 classes to 6 which helped ease the top which had become dominated by a few giant schools.  They also instituted a rule where for each X number of transfers you took that didn't start 9th grade at the school, you had to move up a class.  That was preventing the small private schools from basically being all star teams
